give your tips on catching gar here....

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Both the big one and the one that bit me were long nose gars.

The bite was weird. It didnt hurt or even that bad but since they are so long yet so thin and sharp I bled like a cut hog!

Use a large mepps spinner with a trailer hook, put on a piece of brightly colored pork trailer, either the long skinny one or the frog shape. Pull the mepps spinner right under the surface, the gar will take it, let him run with it for 10 seconds or so. you will also catch a lot of mudfish this way............

I have never seen the rope trick work in Florida

With the rope let the fish take it. Dont start reeling. Use just enough pressure to simulate a struggling fish to make the gar keep chomping.

Also if you try the small hook trick make sure you use braid. Also dont just cast the minnow and hope for a bite. Sight cast ahead of the gar reel the minnow pass the gar quickly as they love to hit any shiny quickly moving thing!

Also the rope trick tends to work better on long nose gar. That looks like a shortnose.

your asking me to go against all ive learned
its instinct to yank when a fish bites :grinno:

i always use braided.
sucks for knots and birds nest but i can pull in a big one plus 10 lillie pads
:D

sounds good.not really any sight casting needed there everywhere in the lake.lol
they boil.will hunt down the vid after this.

and i know i need to let them swallow the minnow.
sucks tho cus i dont believe the "few days it will rust out"
in saltwater i would guess weeks,fw longer.
i may need to experiment.lol

I know its hard not to set the hook!

My reaction is so strong that one time when I was trying to get my ATF on frozen shrimp and used fishing line to make it move like live, when he hit I damn near jerked him out of the tank!
