give your tips on catching gar here....

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
For our Orlando MFK Fishing Meetup yesterday, we were putting a hurting on the gars with regular circle hooks. You just let the gar run with the bait for a while until it actually eats the bait. The "nose" of the gar's mouth is bony but to the rear is normal "fish mouth" structure that is hookable. Circle hooks keep the hooking location up front so that the fish can be released with minimal injury.

try a frow on a hook ( any size will work) they hit awsome this way i caught a 3 footer out of the misour river doing this with a HUGE bullfrog i found swimming around but u have to let them run with it for like 10 minutes to make sure they take it good and use a circle hook :) hope this helps!

I can't keep the blasted things out of my sardine-baited turtle traps- even the basking traps, which have no underwater entrance!

ok well for past 5 months ive ben fishing for gar non-stop every weekend, and ive developed a few methods.

1 is i use a large bobber, either leader or no leader, and a small circle hook. i catch large shad, carp, crappie etc. cut them into chunks bout 1 inch across and hook and chunk in deep end. my bobber goes down really slow, i got a gar and i open my spool and lett him run my line out and after bout 5 minutes i close my spool and yank. ive caught a good 8 in 1 day with this method.
another method is i get a small fish, chunk of fish , or large fish head and chunk it on bottom and let it sit, when my line starts moving or pole bends over i open spool and let him run with it.

now these methods are what i use for longnose, i aint seen alligator gar down at my river.

my setup: heavy action tiger spinning rod, 20 lb. spiderwire and trilene xt, 2 large open faces, circle hooks(assorted), large red and white bobbers or orange weighted.

oh and if u go for longnose careful when reeling in cuz u can break their bottom jaw, ive did it 1ce.
hope it helps:)

I have never landed a gar but once when i was walking along the shore, i saw a 3 foot long gar with another lure hanging from its mouth. I wanted to catch it so i casted my rapala a ways beyond and reeled in until the lure was 5 inches from it. It snatched the lure. I set the hook once... twice and thrice incase it didnt do it the first time. The gar shook his head for a moment and was off! the drag was going crazy and the gar pulled all my line out i didnt know what to do so i held it a while until it broke the swivel! I was SOOO mad, not only cuz i had lost a 9 dollar lure but becauze i lost what would have been my biggest fish!!! IT WAS HUGE!!! My arm was sore after that!

Get a car battery and an inverter out by the lake. Then take two extension cords and run them in opposite directions. Plug them in and...:grinno:

Or ya can just toss a stick of TNT out there in the middle and it will be raining gars.

haha :ROFL::ROFL::ROFL:
