ok well for past 5 months ive ben fishing for gar non-stop every weekend, and ive developed a few methods.
1 is i use a large bobber, either leader or no leader, and a small circle hook. i catch large shad, carp, crappie etc. cut them into chunks bout 1 inch across and hook and chunk in deep end. my bobber goes down really slow, i got a gar and i open my spool and lett him run my line out and after bout 5 minutes i close my spool and yank. ive caught a good 8 in 1 day with this method.
another method is i get a small fish, chunk of fish , or large fish head and chunk it on bottom and let it sit, when my line starts moving or pole bends over i open spool and let him run with it.
now these methods are what i use for longnose, i aint seen alligator gar down at my river.
my setup: heavy action tiger spinning rod, 20 lb. spiderwire and trilene xt, 2 large open faces, circle hooks(assorted), large red and white bobbers or orange weighted.
oh and if u go for longnose careful when reeling in cuz u can break their bottom jaw, ive did it 1ce.
hope it helps
