So I have 2 votes for female and 1 for a male. How can I tell?

The people are seeing or not seeing a black spot in the dorsal fin. Females will typically have it, and males will not. Though I have heard of the spot fading in and out.

Certainly not an Escondido, but the true i.d. of the fish has me puzzled. The spots of the fish are large and irregular hinting 'Carpintis', but the hue and color (I see mostly blue color in the pictures) of the fish say 'Cyanoguttatus'. I cannot see the pic clearly enough to determine if there are any facial worm-like markings which would indicate Carpintis again... Of course there is a chance the fish is a cross between the two.
