What is the difference between an escondido and a carpinte?
 
They are the same fish essentially. Escondidos are from a specific area... called Escondido. :D
 
How do you tell the difference then?

What I meant was how do you tell the difference between a regular carpinte and an escondido?
 
A regular carpinte will have the larger spots but not the wormy facial markings on it. The carpinte from the escondido region have the worm like pattern.
 
What does wormy mean?

The worm-like markings on the face are traits of both carpintis and carpintis sp. Escondido.

The most notable difference is the vibrant coloration of the Escondido's. They have a beautiful greenish/turquoise coloration that is matched by no cental american cichlid IMO.

Here is a good example of the same species hailing from different regions.

wow, thats what mine prob. would have looked like at that size if he hadn't died, I still can't get over that, I've heard they are hard to keep but I raised mine fine from almost a baby to almost 5". Nice specimen btw very nice.
