Ok so,

I went to the glass thickness guide on the top of the page and besides the "biotch fest" that happened up there, I really didnt get that much out of the thread... So im looking into pricing out the cost of glass, but needed some imput from you all...

So 96" x 36" (92" x 32" is the actual glass size that i will order) (88" x 28" viewable).. Is 1/2 inch thick ok for this build (also this will be a plywood build only the front will be glass). :nilly:

Also i wanted to know what type of glass should i use. I was thinking tempered, but i wanted to get some feed back and let me know what you think?

Rivermuds calculator is pretty good. For a ply tank, the hieght you need is from the bottom of the viewable glass area to the water line.
Use normal float glass. If it breaks it just cracks and doesn't shatter into a million pieces.

1/2" is probably enough. 15mm would be a nice safety factor but not entirely necessary. I agree, do not use tempered glass - it seems like a great idea but it's much more expensive, and if you chip it, it esplodedes.

and watching your tank ASPLODE after a small bump with something that has a point .. not a good time

I used an almost identical size piece in my tank. My decision to use tempered over plate was that if it does break with someone in front of it I'd rather them get hit with a bunch of little square pieces of glass than a few big shards. Keep in mind that the edges of tempered are the vulnerable spots not the face. Sure if you hit it hard enough with a pointed object it will break but so will the plate with all the water pressure behind it but with a lot less force needed to break it. Most aquarium bottoms are tempered glass, sliding glass doors are tempered glass, glass table tops are tempered glass, side windows on cars are tempered glass, and the list goes on. How often are heavy pointed objects flying through the air in your home?
Here is a great video on tempered glass.

lol I Have 3 boys, 2 running around and one crawling around but soon to be running. One short story I have to tell about the strength of tempered glass is when I was first putting rocks in my tank I had a brain fart and dropped one big flat piece in and of course it didn't go right to the bottom but rather since it was flat it planed through the water and right into the glass. My tank is 4' wide and 30" deep and the rock was about 6 lbs. I didn't see the rock hit I only heard a "thud" and then saw the rock laying against the glass... Needless to say I lower every piece of rock to the bottom of the tank now.

tempered is more likely to break .. easier to brake .. and if there is enough deflection it will break the glass ..

the idea is GREAT!!! but the application can be less then perfect ..

but then again i have never tested this my self .. so i could be 100% wrong ..

How is it easier to break? Its 4-6 time stronger than plate glass!!?? Im going to have it sitting inside a 2" x 4" and resting against another 2" x 4" (well actually 2" x 3.5"). So all the edges will be covered, by the outer 2"x4". and then 2" will be sealed against the 2" x 3.5"

This is issack's build

and im going to copy that design....
