glass thickness 96" x 32"

So i know that the bottom of the tanks (larger ones) use tempered glass and plate glass around the side... WHY?? I know that the bottom of the tank takes the most weight and is beaten up the most from cleaning it and all, so why wouldnt it be as good for a viewing window?

Its all about cost. If all 5 pieces of glass on tanks were tempered then the price would be much higher. Its the same reason why tanks now days are thinner glass then they use to be. I have an old 55 and it has no center brace because its 3/8" glass. New 55's are 1/4" with a plastic center brace because the plastic center brace is cheaper than making all sides 3/8".

most new 55g's are centered braced and tempered on all sides

I'm waiting and watching this thread with you as I have been offered a nearly 8*4 sheet of tempered.

I'm tempted to build with it but the thought of an exploding tank face has slowed my enthusiasm somewhat...

So what do you think? 1/2" Tempered would suffice?
I think that would be fine. Make sure that the 1/2" thickness is counterset into the front panel so none of the edge is exposed, then I'd put a frame over the inset to further protect the edge...

By the way, what are you keeping that needs the 32" depth?

The cost of custom cut and tempered glass has got to be astronomical!

May I ask, why are you not considering Plexiglas?

I am keeping Pbass,Arowana, cats, and eventually rays... So i figured 32" would be perfect for all... No one im my area (that i have been able to find) makes or cuts plexiglass... Also its like 2 times the cost (unless you know someone you want to hook me up with)... I would love to do acrylic, but the price is what has set me back... Im trying to keep this at or under 1500.00... so far im doing a good job including the purchase or another FX-5... If you can help me out with that then im completely down... and be ready for me to start buying A BUNCH OF SCRUBBIES hehehehe!!!!!!!

I think 30" of depth is plenty, I'd go for the footprint area, especially for rays.

My 225 is only 24 deep and that is working fine for my Aro and Cats etc...IMO

OK here is the Acrylic sheet guys...they ship and do any size you want...
