I honestly don't mind glow fish, that patent is stupid and shameful however..
But the genetic modifications to glowfish aren't anything like what happened to fancy goldfish, which I think both look awful and impair the fishes ability to even swim.

As far as I’m aware of the origins of glofish was someone was trying to create a fish that would glow when there were toxins in the water.

I know they were used or going to be used in water treatment plants some how. I believe the florescent coloring was to be able to locate them better. I think to help recapture and "study".

way back when the wife wanted a tank of her own to share my hobby, so I got her a 75 g, and she filled it stock full of glow fish, like 35 glow fish, 3 or 4 dif types that schooled in dif water columns, with the led lighting was quite the acid trip with out the acid to watch. after around 8 months she decided fish was not her. So I took them all to the local fish store that was happy to take them and put a JD pair in the tank. Male JD males are much better looking glow fish. they just lazy, sleepy and hungry.

Nothing wrong with glo fish. If they appeal to kids and get them into the hobby, it’s a good thing.

I am no kid and deslike the artificial look of glo fish, except for red glo tiger barb which look remarkably natural. I bought a school of them and they pop in color in the background of plants.

For the cost of a school of 12 of them you could have stocked the tank depending on what fish you choose and what size tank.

I don't like tiger barbs but I do like the glow red fish. Those red tetras look good. Id buy those if they weren't $14 each.
Petsmart are selling glo barbs and tetra for $9 with buy 3 get one free deal in my area, so not too pricey but still double to triple regular fish price.

Red tetra look artificial, and is not the same as red tiger barb. I think retaining the barring makes glo tiger natural looking. Most glo fish were developed from albino form to maximize glo effect, but also made to look artificial.
