GLOFISH- FERTILE OR STERILE - FACT OR MYTH

Are Glofish Fertile or Sterile ?

Have any of the members here ever was successful in producing fry ?

Also if you indeed bred a Glofish to a natural who the offspring come out as a GLOFISH

they are man made, "dyed"

Not true, they are genetically engineered. Yes man made but not dyed.

To answer the OP they will breed and often do. They produce glofish but if crossed with zebra danios they produce and interesting glofish that has the zebra stripes.

It is illegal to sell fry but not illegal to breed(it infringes their copyright).

arent the parents injected with whatever the crap is that makes deep sea jellyfish glow and then they breed them and then there are glofish

No need for apologies. Many people consider it inhumane to dye fish, as it can (does) cause health issues, but genetically engineered fish supposedly have no difference in life-span or health vs normal fish.

No. That would be the same as dying a fish (and I'm pretty sure that wouldnt make them "glow" anyway). They have been genetically altered in a lab by messing with their DNA. It's a lot more complicated than simply injecting something.

So they are fertile ?

GLOFISH® FLUORESCENT FISH ETHICAL PRINCIPLES
http://www.glofish.com/ethics.asp

The providers of GloFish® fluorescent fish realize that the enormous potential of genetic technology carries with it an important responsibility. To help ensure that we use this technology appropriately, we dedicate ourselves to the following guiding ethical principles:

Environmental Safety First. We believe it is of paramount importance that all the fluorescent fish we offer for sale be safe for the environment. To ensure that we are successful, stringent testing will be performed before any fish is made available to the public, with specific emphasis placed on analyzing growth rates, temperature sensitivities, and mating success. Any line of fluorescent fish demonstrating increased strengths or successes in these areas relative to non-fluorescent fish of the same species, or otherwise displaying any characteristic that poses an environment concern, will not be offered for sale.

They are quite fertile, and inherit the "glo". I've seen other members on here breed them.

Really? That's interesting, do you have a link?
