Sorry for the title. This is a family site
Cliff notes
My 200 watt visitherm stealth burned up last night
It killed my prized pair of Angelfish (Breeding constantly but eggs were either consumed or someone had birthing issues) and a few growing bosemani rainbows and a pictus catfish trio
The heater stuck on raising the tank temperature to 93 degrees
The story. Upon joining this site I asked and researched and 99% of folks recommended Marineland visi therm stealth heaters almost no one had issues it seems back then. I promptly bought 5 one for each of my tanks including a 50 watt for my 10 gallon (The only remaining one that works... It will be replaced anyways)
First a 200 watt on another 55 gallon had stray voltage . No deaths but I got shocked a wee bit
Second occurrence a 100 watt on a 20 gallon just plain stopped working (no heat) No deaths
third occurrence a 200 watt on a 90 gallon stuck on and nearly killed my prized bichir tank it raised the temperature to 91 degrees and luckily I caught it in time. After some rehab all the bichirs made it.
Now my FOURTH!!!! occurrence
200 watt stealth stuck on again (New unit but not the newest model) killing the fish mentioned above.
ALL of these heaters mentioned were less than 13 months old
Visi therm stealth is GARBAGE in my experience. Be warned
I have since switched every heater over to Ebo Jager as per 12 volt mans suggestion and could not be any happier.
Taylor Carswell
PS Should have mentioned all heaters were sized properly to the tank. None were allowed to run dry ever and were never abused or dropped...
Also the models mentioned were all purchased within a week of each other and were not the newest model where they finally broke down and dropped an extra .10 cents each unit and installed a little light to let you know when the heater is on. Just the black units with the red dial on top.
