The quality of some these products (Marineland/Perfecto) & others is getting pathetic

I have always been disappointed with Perfecto products.

their aquariums are made with thinner glass, flimsier braces/trim and thinner silicone seals than Aqueon/Oceanic tanks and their flourescent light fixtures are not nearly as good as the Aqueon ones.

problem is, I was hoping that when Marineland bought out Perfecto, the quality would improve.

it didn't. all they did was bevel edges of the Perfecto tanks, and left the crappy seals/trim and thin glass the same.

every time I go into my LFS I shake my head at the Perfecto 265g they have set up. it has thinner glass than my Aqueon 150g. just a hair thinner, but thinner none the less...

they build them as cheap as they can..my LFS orders them in 'because they are the cheapest ones' and thats what the average customer wants.

I think KaiserSousay might have a valid point about low wattage. We've been using a Hydor Theo UL 400 Watt heater for 4 years now (300 gallon tank). I bought three heaters, but have only used one heater in the tank. I think the water running through the Hammerhead pump might warm the water up a bit...but the one heater has been sufficient.

However, all the horror stories of fish being cooked to death scare me. I think I need something with a safety thermostat for our new set up.

What I am thinking is low watts per gallon, coupled with good circulation would equal no worries about boil out.
Even if the heater were to stick on, the worst this little heater could do is mid 80s` for my tank.

I'm with you on this one. I have an acrylic tank with a well insulated sump so I don't have much heat loss. I currently running 450 watts of heater on 500 gallons of water.

I had a crappy Won Brothers controller take a dump and stick "on". Tank was up to 82 when I noticed it. No fish fry. Still have 450 watts but a Ranco controller now.

PS. Back on track. I've had a non lighted stealth heater go bad in my aging tank, it stuck "off". So far the replacement has been fine but I will never use a heater in a tank with fish unless it is connected to a "quality" controller.

one thing I know that eliminates the problem of heater failure is using two smaller heaters instead of one.

it creates a fail safe situation.

if one heater fails OFF, the other will stay on - fish safe

if one heater fails ON, the other will stay off - fish safe.

the chances of BOTH heaters failing either ON/OFF at exactly the same time is so low its virtually zero.

it would be like getting hit by lighting twice at the exact same time..

its not going to happen.

Sorry for your loss i have never had a stealth go bad,currently have three,But i have had a few heaters go bad (tetra,theo also had a ebo destroyed by an oscar it was a good heater he just did not like it)thats why i whiched to the stealths,he hasn,t broken one since,been three years and all three stealths is still going strong. I think all companys have problems its just messed up when you get the short end of the problems.
