Hmm, I've had nothing but good experiences with the visi-therm stealths. Sorry about your losses, it always sucks to lose fish.

Yeah , Some of my favorites :(

I had two of the black plastic-no light-red knob Stealth heaters go bad. Fortunately they stopped heating rather than being stuck on. Sorry for your loss Taylor.

I see Conner has posted about his Stealth heaters working fine. It should be noted that he has a different version.

Bottom line - avoid Stealth heaters. If they had one model that has serious reliability issues, I would not trust the entire line.

i too have had ebo. quick question kinda off topic sry but anyone tried out those out of tank inline from your canister heaters?

Does seem every winter a large number of people have heater issues., with being stuck on being the worst case.
I have gone over a fairly large number of back posts, here and other sites, and have found most all reported deaths were in tanks where the watts per gallon were 5 watts to a gallon, or more.
Not everyone of the boil outs, TC`s 90, with a 200 as an example, but most..
With our present cold snap, I finally needed a heater myself.
Off to walmart and got the smallest heater my store had.
Cheap-o, tetra 50 watt for my 55g.
It did take a few days of this being on almost all the time, to bring the tanks temp. up to the 78 range.
I have pretty decent circulation, a pair of penguin350.
So what?
What I am thinking is low watts per gallon, coupled with good circulation would equal no worries about boil out.
Even if the heater were to stick on, the worst this little heater could do is mid 80s` for my tank.

Here in Philly the temperature can vary over a 100 degrees from the depths of winter to a summer heat wave. We end up using a higher watts/gallon to keep a tank at the proper temperature during the winter. We have to worry about fish loss in a tank getting too cold if the heater fails (no heat) in the winter and a tank overheating (stuck on) during the other three seasons.

Folks in warmer parts of the world (e.g., Florida) have less to worry about since they can use a lower watts/gallon ratio.

I have a Hydor ETH300 on my 75G. It is hooked in-line with the XP3 canister.

Been working fine for 6 months; only time will tell if it is reliable. It maintains a very tight temperature range. The heater has a light and a relatively loud click as it cycles on/off.

The only downside is the heater can now stop for two reasons: heater fails to heat or the canister stops working. However, the under-temp is only an issue if your room temperature is low. I have to worry as my 75G tank is in a room that drops to the low 60s during the winter nights.

Not sure of the temperature swings in Philly , but my tank stays in my house, not on my porch.:)
We have had temps in low to mid 30s` this winter…I know..sorry..I used to live in Oregon where 30s` during the winter meant Tee shirt time…and then into 90s`-100s` during the summer, but that was outside temperatures.
During our currant economic mess, our house stays in high 60s` to low 70s` these days and just shy of 80 during the summer.
I guess what I`m saying is it would not take allot of watts to keep a tank stable indoors, unless your fish room is in an unheated/cooled area.

my 2 cents or 3?
I have only had one Stealth go bad on a service account. it just fell apart & quit working. We use to sell ViaAqua which was pretty good & still use some without problems then I had some customers start to complain & return them. So I started to push the Stealths because of the reviews early on & now reading this & I have had a couple customers stated they quit working? They are suppose to automatically shut off!
Ebo back in the day were the best heaters by far, then Eheim picked it up & for awhile people were having a lot of problems them going bad, I know because I tried them again & they failed. Maybe now they are better again?
But these damn company's need to get their Head out of their *** & make good heaters period since it is a major life support of our aquatic animals. I have been in business/hobby now for over 30 years & you would think they would get it right by now. These giant companies seem to always look for the cheapest way to make something then charge a arm & a leg for it. I could on & on about products we have had or tested. I typically try a lot of new stuff before selling it because if it sucks I'm not selling it if I would not use it.
The quality of some these products (Marineland/Perfecto) & others is getting pathetic. And any employee working at their factories etc.. that let something go out the door sub par should get a kick in the arse! I have as many others have a lot of $ investing in our aquarium hobby/business to deal with crappy products.
Do it right the first time or don't do at all!

okay i'm done for now. :)

^^^^^^^^ I agree 100% ^^^^^^^^

I have had problems with Topfin heaters, Neptune heaters, Marineland Stealth . . . .

I currently have 4 different brand heaters "stuck on". I unplug them when I go to work, so they run about 16 hours and are off 8 hours. I know that this is not ideal, but IMO all heaters suck!

On a side note, on more then one occasion, by plugging and unplugging the heaters I have had some resume normal operation for a period of time. Good thermometers are a must, no alternative until the technology or dedication to quality advances!
