Go to Heck marineland ! Goshdarnit !

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The problem is even if a company were to create a higher quality heater, even if they didn't jack up the price, it would be too expensive for the average consumer to even consider so it wouldn't last very long. Right now the best way to go is to get multiple smaller heaters and a quality temperature controller like a Ranco. It amazes me how people spend hundreds of dollars on fancy filters and such and 20 dollars on a cheapo heater.

Sorry for your loss tcarswell.
I have had stealth's that were lemons in the past. Luckily when i switched to stealth i still kept my old ebo jagers. They are still working perfectly and i have no complaints they are very accurate and reliable.
I do what 12 volt man does and have hagen heater guards on them to prevent breaks and heater burn on the fish. I also like how the heater guards somewhat conceal them against my black backgrounds.

lol I see these threads almost monthly on mfk now you would think people would learn... but like you said they seemed fine 5 years ago.

Ive had 3 go out on me. no business with marineland for me.

stick with ebo jager people. i have had one running non stop in my tank for almost years now with not one problem whatsoever. i bought a visi therm once, the glass one, it was nice and worked well. i have never owned a stealth.

sorry about your heater failing taylor. the collateral damage is the real loss though, all those fish. i read you made the switch to jager heaters- wise choice. i think you'll like them.

one note: i left the heater on during a water change once and totally forgot. i only noticed while dumping water back ina nd the liquid sizzled on the heater, causing it to violently shake. i inplugged the heater immediately and let it air cool before adding water. heater didnt break and worked fine afterward- no problems. just remember to unplug during a water change.

Id spend 60-120 on a 10 year heater no questions asked. The Ranco controllers and new heaters together are gonna be more than that :grinno:

Any good links on where to get the heater guard that might help conceal it as well ?

I was one of those that switch from Ebo to Marineland Stealth back in 2007. I have the older models without the light. I made the switch because I was noticing my Ebo was getting condensation inside and that got me worried. Water and electricity should never mix. This thread is giving me second thought if I should replace all my stealth heaters. This goes against the principle of if it's not broken don't fix it.:D Lucky for me, I bought one these during the black Friday sale. Now I'll put it to use. For those of you spending mega bucks on fish you should look into investing one of these.

tcarswell,

The ones that i use are made by a company called tronic. I can get them pretty much at any lfs in my area. Won't be able to help you further sorry im located in Canada. I did a quick search at bigalsonline.com and they seem to only have the 50w models which are sold out.
Do a search for tronic heater guard and you should find something.

any size tronic heater guard will fit the Ebo Jager.

you really don't need the largest size, as any size will prevent breakage.

remember that heaters break not because a fish smashes them, but because when the fish smashes into the heater, the bottom of the glass tube smacks into the back glass of the tank, breaking it. this is why the heater breaks. it does this because all of us have the suction cups at the top, which allows for the bottom to hit the back glass when hit. with the regular suction cups at the top and the heater guard at the bottom portion, the glass tube cannot ever make contact with the back aquarium glass. thus, it is safe.

so any of the tronic models will prevent breakage. I think mine are the 100w size on my 250w ebos, which look like this:
