Going Diving in Africa!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
There is always a fuel problem in Malawi.
We had to get fuel on the black market last time, even though we reserved it ahead of time.

Malawi is one of the safest African countries.
In relative terms, of course.

Returning to Malawi!
Who wants to go?
11 days of dives will begin 9/17/2012 and last till 9/30/12, I will be arriving on the 14th and leaving on the 30th. You can arrive earlier and leave later if you wish.
We will usually do 2 dives a day. Air refills and tanks are provided, but you will need your own BCD/Regs/wetsuit if you plan to SCUBA. Lodging/food/boat/crew will run about $1800...
Flights out of LAX to Lilongwe are running $1600 which is $400-800 less than i have paid the other times i have gone.
We are looking for 3-5 more divers in this great freshwater lake with more than 500 colorful species of cichlids!

I just paid $1000 less than other times i have gone to Africa for the flights.
Its running about $1500 out of SFO, and $1600 out of LAX.

Now is the time, i don't know why the fairs are so cheap, but next year they may be close to $3000 again this could be your only chance.

Wow that's cheap.
What about visas?
How about money? Is US dollars ok? Is Malawi a cash only place or are ATM’s and CC’s used commonly?

dont need a visa in malawi, just a passport and copy of your yellow fever shot which is good for ten years.
money? $1800 to the lodge when we get there, you would not have to pay for anything else, except beer.
if you want to buy gifts or carvings, you could pay with either US dollars or Malawi Kwatcha, the curbside people usually take both but not credit cards!
no credit/debit card access, other than the main lodge that we stay at for 4 nights.
won't really need credit cards, we will be out diving 90% of the time, but cash is the main form to use.
gift purchases are done the first or last day in the country.

I like to snow board all over the place and if you let them know its sporting good equipment baggage fees go way down... I would stuff all my gear and board and clothing into one 6ft bag and it would be very cheap and over weight...
