Going peaceful... what do you guys think?

I think you'll need to do "leaf changes" every few weeks/months when the old leaves began to break down.

I've done angels + Apistos before in a 90g and it worked reasonably well. I had a crazy idea to do an overcrowded all male Apisto tank, but only managed to add a few dozen males (3 species) before running out of money. Some were a bit territorial but no serious aggression, and it was a fun experiment. It would be more difficult to keep everybody happy if you go with pairs/trios.

yeah i wouldnt mind having to change the leaves out every month or two just wouldnt want bits of leaves floating around everywhere in the water column, and what would be a good way to get the leaves to sink right away. id most likely use oak leaves since i have a steady supply of clean (pesticide free) leaves that i could get from my parents place out in the country when i visit them but should i like do a quick boil of them before putting them in the tank (dont want to many tannins to leech out)... maybe just pour bioling water over them in the bath tub to do a quick sterilizing...

as for the all male aspect, that would be cool since the males are more colorful anyways but i thought these guys were the least stressed in groups? from what im reading they are pretty darn sensitive so want to keep them as stress-free as possible while at the same time having as many males as i comfortably could...

I did all males to reduce aggression...they didn't look stressed.

Many relatively common Apisto species are not as demanding as you may think. I had A. agassizi, A. cacatuoides and A. macmasteri in that tank. Also kept A. borelli and A. rotpunkt (M&F) in two other tanks and they both bred regularly. It wasn't hard...

thanks for the info peter, your water is pretty similar to mine right? did you use RO or anything because im definitely not getting an RO unit anytime soon, i think im gonna give the guy im looking at ordering from a call as well and ask him about them and what conditions he has them in right now, all males would def be a good idea though but hes not that big of a vendor and has them listed as pairs so not sure if he will want to just sell me a bunch of males and have the females left... but thats cool you were able to have multiple males of the same spp. i would have thought same spp males especially would fight but i guess with no female they wouldnt really have anything to fight over...

You may want to ask the vendors. Most people want pairs and trios so there's a good chance they'll have extra males. Might want to try the CAAS board too.

My water is on the soft/acidic side. If you are not sure, try a few first and see how they like it.

Forgot to say that I would not recommend mixing Apistos with T. pasionis...

the pasionis pair i do not have yet but was going to get from a fellow cichlid enthusiast a couple hours from me, i thought the pasionis would be ok since they are supposed to not be that aggressive and only get slightly larger than the apistos, do you think they would be too aggressive?

It's subjective. While T. pasiones are one of the more peaceful CAs, they are still a CA cichlid. I wouldn't personally mix Apistos with CAs. That's just my preference.

Is there any reason why you are going after the wild-caught Apistos instead of tank-bred ones? The tank-bred ones may be a bit more forgiving about water parameters.

there is no specific reason why i am going for wild ones other than this vendor is in the same state and i have ordered fish from him before and was very happy with them, and he mainly deals in wild caughts, if you guys have a suggestion for a good vendor of apistos that doesnt charge too much in shipping i would definitely give them a look

and yeah for some reason i was thinking that they were SA lol but yeah they might not fit with what im planning, i did however pick up a little male krib today (i know they are african lol) just because its pretty much the only dwarf cichlid available in my area, just to see how he likes my water since from what i was reading they have similar water requirements, i may or may not keep him when i get the apistos
