whats your take on the Road to Hana? ive been looking at reviews and theyre pretty mixed. some say the scenery was worth the hectic traffic/hassle and others say dont bother, just go to other places where there arent that many tourists

Never did it. I've only been on Maui for a total of about 10 days. It was a 20 minute flight from Oahu ($30!) but being a college student I couldn't afford a hotel or a car.

are the other two guidebooks I'd recommend. It's quite worthwhile to get more than one, as you'll get contrasting views.

As always, a guidebook is just that - a guide. Your most valuable information will come from asking the locals for advice & info. Most of them will be more than happy to provide tips & recommendations.

If you do head into the less touristy areas, please be respectful! I've been to Hawaii numerous times now, and it's horrible to see people treat the land like their own personal trashbin / porta potty (many of the less touristy spot will *not* have facilities, so be prepared) or piss off the locals by ignoring private property / closed government areas (Maui Revealed especially has spots that will require you to trespass)

joseeee :D hi :D hows it going x

long time no talk girl! youve been a little quiet on FB lately!

You should also go to the flea markets. They have very interesting things you can buy!

My family on my father's side is originally from Maui. I just got back from a family reunion there (im born and raised on O'ahu), and it was a lot of fun being a tourist in my own state.

My aunty is the director of training at the Ka'anapali Beach Hotel. its "the most hawaiian hotel there is" according to their slogan. i agree. lots of culture there. If you want some help on staying at that hotel (that hotel is very very reasonable) then PM me and maybe we can get something going for that. Im her favorite nephew mehehehehehe

Learn about Hawaiian culture as much as you can. That motive should allow you to find the LOAD of things to do. (i ask you this as a fellow fishkeeper as well as a Native Hawaiian.) Fish and things from the water were absolute paramount in our culture. im sure you'll find things to appreciate about it.

The drive to Hana isnt bad. just dont be the one that's driving. :P it takes some hours though, so leave before noon if you dont want it to be the last thing you do for the day.

let me know if you need help!

Perhaps I was not fair in my assessment of the road to Hana. We left in the early afternoon, managed to get behind a large pick up truck with locals in it, so made very good time getting there. We got there too late to check anything out. For me, the drive qualified me to wear a tshirt that reads "I've been to Hana" been there, done that, on to something else.... The 7 pools sounds cool...guess one should plan on spending the whole day there.

What impressed me the most about Maui was the first time I flew there as an adult, and we landed in Hilo instead of Kona. It was so green and lush and so tropical--lots of buildings with corrogated metal roofs just like in the early 1900s. Hilo looked just like old Hawaii pictures of long ago. Kona is hot and dry, a desert of lava rock where they built mega resorts. The two towns are like different worlds. If I could, I'd fly into Hilo everytime. My mother is a "Maui girl" so we have reason to go to Maui for her reunions. Last year, she and her classmates threw themselves an 80th birthday party, since they all turned 80 that year.

I also agree with taking something warm if you do the Haleakala sunrise thing...it is quite cold in the pre dawn up on that mountain.
