I've had Salt for years, don't use a aquaclear, you need a filter that can hold biological load, look into a wet dry system or at least a canister filter, live rock will help

in that small of a tank a sump is superfluous.. a pound per gallon of quality LR would be the main filtration as wouls a skimmer if one was to be had.. the aquaclear makes it a redunant system and a sallback if something should happen to the powerheads that water wan't circulating...
plus aquaclears o carry bio media and can very easily be converted into a good cheap DIY refugium... so i think that can handle the bio load.. as well as oversizing the filter for the tank.. in my 10 gallon i had an AC30 i converted into a fuge, worked fine, i had 0 nitrates...

Big: you said that he should get good live rock. what is considered to be good live rock? im currently looking at fiji? but im new just like phrack.

phrack: good luck on your sw tank.

thanks and i was looking into getting fiji live rock also. and thanks for the advice and i have found a nice looking fish specialty store close by me: http://www.thehiddenreef.com/istar.asp?tfile=homepage.template if any1 in the Philadelphia area has gone here before tell me what you think of the store im trying to head there this week and take a look around and try to get a price on the build and start taking the first steps into get the aquarium going even though im on a tight budget atm :(

by me at least good LR is expensive...

i can get it as low as $5 a pound but it's basically crap..
the cheapest 'good' stuff is $8, but all that has is coralline, no orther algea or polyps or anything...
the GOOD shizz is like $10-11 a pound :( i hate my area...

names really aren't THAT important, but they do have some subtle differences..
there figi- a pretty good rock, considered the standard by most.. typical abstract rock shape..
tonga- usually brached like a shoot of bamboo with a golfball in the center (you ever see one of them?) kinda like a chinese finger trap, but a much looser weave
hawaiian- usually more spherical than the rest.. good growth and a good level rock
Florida aquacultered rock- pretty basic concrete rock.. usually doesn't have the BEST growth on it, but will definately do the job

then there's other stuff from other places, again they are only slim differences..

Man ge a little 29 GAllon Bio cube. They work really good, and I think you can find them on sale for really cheap. Mine is still running awsome. Has the lights and filters built in.
To me it was a bargain.
