If you want some mechanical filtration you can put some generic filter floss in the rear chamber, somewhere easy to get to since it gets gunked up quick.
I personally don't use it anymore and have seen no ill effects. It was too much of a hassle to change out every other day or so.
Some people use a turkey baster and blast off all their live rock before a water change, I do it sometimes if I see anything building up but not everytime.
With good flow you really shouldn't have a ton of dead spots where things can build up.

Same as freshwater, a heater is generally required. I run my reef at 78 degrees.

My aqueon pro seems to work great, and it's submersible and should be able to be put in the back chamber so you don't see it in the display.
As far as water I use distilled water from walmart for doing my top off's for evaporation, you don't want to top off with saltwater.
