going to try breeding clown loaches

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
OK

Lets chuck another thought into the mix.

We all accept ( I think ) that clowns migrate upstream to breed when they reach maturity.......

Are they moving away from something, or towards something ?

most of the time fish will migrate for spawning to avoid larger predators to the eggs & juveniles- smaller water will have smaller predators.
There would also be increased oxygen and lower temperatures & (maybe?) cleaner water.
Unless they are going into the peat-bogs, as mentioned before....

That may well be so....... but when I asked myself that question a horrible thought popped into my head..... but I dont want to say it. I want to see if someone else comes up with the same thought.

Are you thinking brackish?

No, that hadn't occurred to me. If they are migrating UPstream that sounds unlikely.

What is pussling me is that the local people rely on these ( and other fish) for their livelihood. If they are exporting 20 million baby fish a year the breeding places must cover a fairly large area. They must have a pretty good idea where they are breeding. If that is so then they must also have a good idea what the water parameters and conditions are in these places..... and just about any condition can be recreated...... and yet they still cannot make them breed.

So.... maybe it is not the water condition they are going there for.

Why else do fish migrate ?

Some fish migrate soley to spawn the kink here would be why are the fry beleived to live in fast moving water. They may also migrate for the food in the bogs which could be snails, freshwater shrimp or a certain fish which is in high population and demand to feed the ripening females. As the sweedish fellow mentioned they suddenly ate a lot of fish before the spawning. Also the bogs would create the acidic condition he mentioned. Ipersonaly think they may also like the bog because the water is warmer as they seem to enjoy warmer water.

Is there any chance the Russian fellow may still belong to mfk and if so would he like to jion our discussion. I'm sure we would all enjoy his contribution to this topic and put our opinions aside. As we all know hybrids are alive and well on mfk as there is a whole section for them and it is a pretty popular one.

I have no idea whether he has ever been a member of MFK. The thread mentioned was on another forum.

The 'horrible' thought that struck me was that MAYBE they had to return to their place of birth, like the salmon. I dont really believe this would be so but you never know.

Returning for a specific food source, either for the adult females or the young, is a much more likely scenario but you would have thought that this would have been picked up on by now. Breeders have been after the CL for forty + years to my knowledge, it must be a lot longer and still no success.

What we need is someone on the ground in Borneo
