After seeing the new pictures it's definately a freddy. I have a smaller 6 inch freddy that looks exactly like yours. Does yours ever show a more prominant barred pattern? Mine does when it's displaying.

He's (I'm starting to think it's a male Loiselli like ewok said) still settling in. I just got him less than a week ago. At the fish store, he was a lot more yellow and showed the horizontal bar, but not really the vertical bars. Just a lot of "worm" pattern, around the face especially.

i'm going to throw a curve ball out there and say i'm not sure if it's a loiselli or a loiselli - freddy hybrid.
check out my male loiselli for comparison. the markings are near spot on. but the shape of the fish in question is what's kind of throwing me off, plus on occasion you can see bars, which i don't recall seeing on the male i had.

Those photos look very similar to mine. I'm positive it's not a Jag (I was pretty positive when I bought it), but am still on the fence as to nailing down whether it's Loiselli or Friedrichsthalii. I guess the possibility also exists that it could be similar to the as yet undescribed Parachromis species I saw on here a while back, or a combination of Loiselli/Friedrichsthalii, Loiselli/undescribed Parachromis, or Friedrichsthalii/undescribed Parachromis.

I'd like to hear some more opinions, especially from those who have kept these particular Parachromis (Loiselli & Freddy) to see what they think. Even fishes of the same kind can look drastically different for any number of reasons. So let me know what you think.

At the end of the day, it's a beautiful fish with a good atitude. He gets along great with all my other killers. Thanks again everyone. :)

I'm pretty sure it's a freddy. I currently own both freddy and loisellei, and my loisellei never shows bars like your fish is showing outlines of. The first picture in terd's second post shows this barring the most, and neither of the loisellei posted have any vertical barring.

While I'm not disagreeing with you on the ID, my female Loiselli did show vertical bars for about the first two weeks after I brought her home. And she was nowhere near a yellow color, closer to a darkish olive drab. After settling in, she is bright yellow all the time with no vertical bars at any time. I'm sure it will probably help a lot (to ID it) once this fish gets settled in and comfortable.

Thanks for the help.:)

Could you maybe post more pictures of the mystery fish after it settles in? I'd love to be able to get a positive ID on this one. I bought my loisellei as a teeny tiny juvinile, so I've never really seen its stress coloration.

I'd be glad to post some more pictures in a week or two. A lot of my fishes have gone through huge color changes from when I brought them home to a couple of weeks later. I think a lot of this has to do with feeding. I use Hikari Cichlid BioGold, Frozen Krill, and Frozen Bloodworms more than anything. They seem to have the greatest effect on more vivid coloration.

And as to the stress coloration of my Loiselli, when they opened the bag at the fish store when she arrived (they ordered it for me), she was white. When I brought her home she was plenty dark for a couple of weeks and showed vertical bars. Her main coloration was almost an olive green. Now (and since she settled in), she is a bright vibrant yellow with zero vertical bars.

The interesting part was that my fish store had ordered a Jaguar for me (and two more Jags for themselves). What showed up was a 5" female jag with nearly all of it's scales on the bottom of the bag. The 5" Loiselli female (the one I bought) in the same bag completely white and another 3" white fish that later turned out to be another female Loiselli. I couldn't believe they would put a couple of bigger fish and the smaller one in the same bag. It must've been a battle during transport, the real Jag had lost nearly all of it's scales (which is why I didn't buy her).

Anyway, I'll certainly update this thread. Thanks for looking.:)

The body shape, head shape and jaw shape are all off for a Loisellei. Certainly a Friedrichthalli.

Can you explain the physical differences between the Loiselli and Friedrichsthalii (besides coloration)? How are their head shapes different? Pictures comparing and contrasting their likenesses and differences would help as well, if you have them. The Parachromis is my favorite species of fishes. I'm trying to learn as much as I can about them by studying their habits and behavior (I have 3 of the 5- managuense, loiselli, and apparantly friedrichsthali). I'm still on the hunt for a nice female motaguense to go in with the rest of these "killers". The Dovii, obviously, will not be kept with these others. I'll get a huge tank sometime in the future for a pair (I'm looking at a used 350 soon, the guy wants $1,000).

Thanks very much in advance. :)
