i have been thinking about buying a gold nugget pleco. I have heard that they are carnivores and I have heard that they are herbivores. Which are they?

They are omnivores. They require both meat and veggies in their diet.

If you get a good one from the beginning, it will eat very easily and it will be a very easy pleco to keep. If you get one that doesn't eat, it will probably waste away on you. The best thing to do is to go to the LFS, that has one, and make sure that it has been there awhile before you buy it.
I have had them before, and they always die. I keep some sensitive species, but have never had a species die over and over, and come to think of it.....Every "sensitive" fish I have ever bought is still with me, other than the pleco....They sure are beautiful though...
They are omnivores. Miine eats New Life Spectrum exclusively and is doing very well. They do like high flow, something that many people overlook. My last one loved to sit right in front of the output from the Fluval, right against a piece of driftwood. It also made its way onto the output from a HOB.
