Gold or black wolf?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
They are pours tho for sure, started reading aload of papers last night and no where did it say anymore than pours on lower jaw?

I've still slot to learn it seems lol.
J jaws7777 yeah it seems to be all about pore counts, LL scale counts and Gill chin shape.
Literally sat there for hours last night reading scientific papers in various languages through Google translate... I've been known to get a bit obsessed haha.
Cheers kno4te kno4te I'm guessing the gills would be touching if mala then? I was leaning towards brassie from my readings?

There should be some at the very top of the mouth. So probably need to recount.

Yes. Mala folds touch while the others don’t except for intermedius, Mbigua and misiones. So in that case catch locations are key. There’s a bit of overlap as wolves are moved to other areas for food.

Haven’t seen a brassi ever brought in. Although I have some suspicion on a wolf brought in by jzx pet store (Asian store posts on fb). That’s another story.

Mala. Australis has 5 pores. Also jaw shape is to close imo. Doesn't have to touch, that's usually on young specimens but as they get bigger and girthier it stops ime.

Refresher. And I believe pores can go that far back...

I do see characteristics of australis though. The head being blunt and having an underbite. But we've seen malas with such.

Thanks guys, I had a skim over that paper, it's a shame mala is not on some of the tables.
If those pores are included he is at 6. Mala just has the 4 right?
What is the LL count area on mala? I think I need to do a better count as the last few in the pics are barely visible. If it is actually 38 that leaves me at brasiliensis right?
His lateral strip has been disappearing and leaving just a spotted pattern if that makes any difference?
He has been at that quiet LFS for best part of a year and grown from 4" to 9", the manager is a top guy too, having moved his last store into practical fishkeeping (UK's No1 tropical magazine) top ten in the UK. I called him and was told he came from a wholesaler and he can't recall if he had a catch location.

If it’s 6 pores then it’s either intermedius or lacardae. Mala can only have 4.

Folds don’t fit lacardae. I think those pores need to be looked as it again. I believe it’s 5 with the folds it should be australis.

Folds and pores fit more for australis than other wolves.

I've zoomed in further, it was clearer by eye but if those two down bottom count like Moe said it is 6... I haven't got room for a lac and the head shape looks wrong. I'm leaning intermedius now then....

Can’t be intermedius as the scales don’t match up.
