This is my weak attempt at a sticky. I have found very scattered information about this species and have used my experience to try my hardest (in about 30min ) to make a somewhat decent sticky. Feel free to add or remove info as you see fit. Looking forward to improvements :D.

Common Names:

Golden Dorado
Freshwater Dorado
It is called Dourado in Portuguese and Dorado in Spanish, meaning Golden.

Scientific Names:

Salminus maxillosus
Salminus hilarii
Salminus brasiliensis

Family: Characidae

Origin: La Plata basin

Size: a little over 100 cm = approx. 40 inches

Weight: up to 25 kg
= approx. 55 lbs

Popularity as a: gamefish and not often kept in the home aquaria

Reproduction in captivity: induced by hormone injection (Living in fast currents, it needs to swim up the rivers to mature its reproductive gonads (called piracema in Brazil), thus the need of hormone injection for captive breeding.)

Notes: A very appreciated gamefish, its occurrence in the Paraná basin has been threataned due to many dams. It has been maintained by means of artificial reproduction and release of fry.

Apperance:
As a juvenile the dorado seems to be more of a silvery color, but as it reaches larger sizes it begins to show it’s beautiful golden coloration. The tail has a black marking on it throughout it’s life.

Behavior:
Dorado are very active fish and they often swim across the aquarium throughout the day. A relatively aggressive fish that is also known to school (if keeping multiple dorado it is recommended that they are the same size and you have a group of at least four to breakup the bullying. I have tried keeping three and ended up with only two that fight constantly and were therefore separated).

In a Community:
krichardson: “I have mine in a characin community tank of sorts and it rarely bothers the tats and armatus or the brycon or anything else but it does torpedo into whatever fish happens to be in the path of its constant patrolling.”

Diet:
I started with 4-5” juveniles and they ate everything: cut up tilapia, market prawn, pellets, krill, bloodworms, and the occasional feeder. Keep in mind that these are a carnivorous species.

Growth:
I have only kept juveniles up to this point and in two months they are grown about an inch feeding on tilapia and krill.

do a little re-examination on this one.........i am pretty certain that the pair has been split.

i kept one from about 12ish inches until it reached about 15ish really fat inches. if you do not have a huge tank ready, look elsewhere for fish. the dorado is not a friendly community fish its whole life. the bigger they get, the meaner they get.

I'll look into it...

Im looking for more info from Durado keepers... I have been keeping one about 14" in a 125 gal tank. For about 6 months or so. He has grown about 2" since i got him. He has a large indoor pond waiting for him once he gets a little bigger. Hes been eating fresh salmon, shrimp, silver sides, and quarantined feeders.... Water temp in the high 70's parameters excellent.. High current and surface aggitation. Is there any other advice or comments or ideas to help me keep such a gorgeous fish successfully? Thank you.

yea i wish i would've come across this information sooner i just recently bought 2 6 inch golden dorados for my 180 gallon aquarium. After only a few days they would just constantly fight until i had to remove one of them, then the one i had left in the 180 began hastling other tank mates i also have a hyprolycus tatauaia that is 8 inch and a 5 inch snook. he ended up killing the snook the other day and now just swims directly at the payara keeping it in the corner of the tank and away from food although he actually doesn't attack the payara.

Great writeup!
