goldfish are they bad?

Your fish seems to have you trained...starve them then go to thawed silversides. You avoid disease and some come fortified with vitamins. My Jags eat silversides, nightcrawlers, and thawed prawns

Well, goldfish can give your fish parasites if they are left in the tank with your fish... If your fish consume them as quick as you put them in the tank, then your chances of disease from the feeders is decreased dramatically(depending on the fish you're feeding them to). Not only do goldfish carry disease(with all live food you risk disease), but they have a lot of fat in them. When I use live feeders, I prefer rosies over goldfish(less fat but could still be diseased). I also quarintine the feeders for a week before I feed them off. All of this is just my opinion so --research-- and make your own conclusions.
Hope this helps!

could you explain this please?

probably reasons the digestive track will kill alot of pathogens.

It probably does kill some but it probably doesn't kill the ones that live in the digestive systems..
also some of external fungi or bacteria will probably just fall off when the fish is initially dropped into the water.

u need to switch up there diet, if u use goldfish feeders one day use some shrimp the next, some worms and insects ill help alot also to keep a balanced diet,
usually a feeder isnt sufficient enough to cause a prob with ur fish,
but a lack of other vitamins will defiantly help get ur fish get sick,
and alot of ppl just feed feeders and thats why they get blamed for disease outbreaks...cuz of 1 food...
but if u feed a well balanced diet to ur fish an uphold basic maintenence on ur tank ull b fine!!

...alot of disease transfer comes from adding new feeders to emaciated sick feeder bins in lfs. Goldfish farms maintain very high copper levels in growing ponds to reduce diseases associated with overcrowding and single-feed diets. These copper levels, over time, cause liver dysfunction in many fish species and most herp species.

it just makes sense...
its like a person, just eating chicken..they can survive but thell soon develop a disease like diabetes or vitamin c defiency.
and if anybody wants to dispute that....... regular fish that take flakes thats already infused with the essential vitamins an minerals fish need to b healthy, well self explanatory...
but
a single fish feeder isnt enough...
lots of fish feed off of different things like algea and plankton, bacterias, and fish.....,so a fish that eats algea or w/e and gets ate by a fish who eats fish gives that algea nutrient to that fish and blah blah blah...

I agree!

Feeding live is fun!

I believe variety is most important. The negative aspect with the feeders is the possibility of transferring disease. I think there's a minor concern about the copper thing Oddball was taking about too, but a couple feeders a week.....who knows I guess? I feel when we take over the care of an animal we need to feed it and care for it responsibly. The animals don't have a choice, they eat what we give them.

I keep my live feedings to almost zero. I actually quarantine my feeders for a couple weeks :screwy: Then when I want to show off to some friends......:headbang2

I just think saying goldfish are bad is wrong. Maybe feeding only goldfish is bad but in moderation........hell one glass of red wine a day is very healthy......for the fish keeper.
