Goldfish+Cichlids

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i put a godlfish in with my cichlids, and im talking SEVERUM, rainbow cichlid and an appisto. these are weak peaceful fish, they ripped all the scales off of the goldfish. even the non cichlids were attacking it. goldfish are slow and like to rest, most tropical fish are fast and like to move around, the goldfish can't keep away from them as much as they would eachother and they get beaten up.

You don't need a big lecture.
You know what all the fish's needs are.
NO tank life is truly "perfection".
Compromises do not always equal immediate Automatic Fail.
You are watching everything "all day", with sufficient knowledge to recognize when it is unworkable. How bad can things really get, with constant observation? (night time caveat)
50% water change every day... all fish should be so fortunate, as to have that as their new all-time "low" level of care. Geeze.
They're your fish, and it's your gamble... aren't you the guy trying to keep his wife happy about Goldie, with limited fish-space?
You get kudos from me for Effort.

Obviously, I'd talk differently to someone with a first tank & no experience.
So update us, as things unfold. Nothing is written in cement. right?

ya i hear ya ty. I just moved moved fish around tonight from my 55g to my 125g. so im hoping 1month max till they are out of the 30g. Maybe only two weeks. Cant wait :)

Hi, I strongly recommend you dont house your cichlids with the goldfish for the ovbious reason that they require different water parameters and the likley hood that your young cichlids will still nip at the goldfishes long flowing fins.

Hit the nail on the head. Goldfish are cold water fish not tropical.
Just get a RBP-the tropical version of goldfish. They are just as ugly lol.

Actually fancy goldfish like warmer waters (anywhere from 72 degrees to 76 degrees is fine) and are not cold water fish. So, you should be good...all you have to worry about is them nipping the goldfishes fins and what not since you are doing water changes more often

I change my answer. I'm converting my setup from a fancy goldfish tank to a SA cichlid setup. I brought home a small texas cichlid yesterday and last night he destroyed 3 of the 4 fancy's I had (the goldfish were probably double his size so I didn't think it would be a problem). I was going to take the goldfish into my LFS to donate them today. I feel pretty horrible about it. Be careful.

that sucks lol. They are still fine actually they are getting milk from the goldfish as we speak. great parent :)

you can't always just watch and hope that everything is fine, you won't always notice the immediate signs of trouble, that goldfish I had in with my cichlids was a short fin standard goldfish. much much faster than the fancy tail variety that you have and he was beaten the **** out of because he wasnt quick enough by WEAK non aggressive fish some people may have gotten it to work but thats just complete luck. even my appisto was picking on the goldfish and he was 1/3 the size.

same thing happened to me recently, introduced a new oscar into my cichlid tank, not too small. he swam around meeting the other fish, and seemed to fit in great, i watched himcarefully for about an hour until I was satisfyed he was safe. went into the other room to browse some MFK, went back to check on the size of one of my fish, and there was the oscar in the top corner with his left eye completely missing getting his scales ripped off by my vieja. the same vieja who was okay with the fish earlier. and this is two similarly aggressive cichlids we are talking about.
