I don't shed any tears over the existence of goldfish, but I definately would NEVER EVER own one (or any). I think goldfish are dirty, ugly fish. They poop ALL the time. They aren't very interesting to watch/ look at/ clean up after. And the anatomies of the different variations of goldfish are VERY disturbing and "unnatural-looking." Those ones with the brain-looking mass on top of their heads? The tripod ones? The bubble eye ones? Ugh...They freak me out.
Plus almost every bad fishkeeper with a poorly maintained tank that I've seen has been infested with goldfish that don't fit in the tank. I am NOT saying that goldfish are kept exclusively by inexperienced, lazy, or poor fishkeepers, I am just saying that IME, seeing the goldfish I've seen in the environments in which I have seen them, has not helped to change my distaste for goldfish.
Kudos to all of you that do own and love goldfish, though. This hobby is all about personal preference. If you love 'em, keep lovin' 'em. That's the glory of aquariums!
