How am I condoning stunting? I told her to move them out of a 10 to avoid stunting them? From egg to 1.5 years even when raised in a 4000 gallon pond they won't be more than 5-6" long, when raised in a 30 gallon tank they would be approximately 4-5" long, meaning that if they were moved to pond at that point (which is what I suggested) they could be moved before they were stunted. I am trying to help her avoid stunting the fish which is quite the opposite of what you are saying.
My apologies, Kdrun. I must have misinterpreted your post.:nilly:

That's incorrect. Shubunkins and comets are fairly distinctive, not merely a sub-variant of a comet. Comets are more distinguishable by the scissor-edged tail with a more streamlined body than the more rounded caudal lobes of the shubunkins.

Could you please provide a reference for that? I know if you ask 30 people you will get 30 opinions, but I know I can come up with at least 5, perhaps more, references that will state that the difference between them is simply coloration. I would be very interested in reading the conflicting reports. It amases me at how little agreement there can be in taxonomy. Taxonomy is so conflicted at the species level, but I think its worse at the variant with in a race level.

In my experience the shubunkin term is used for any white bodied comet, but is far more extensively applied to those possessing at least a speckled color patters showing gold, brown and black speckles almost in a weak attempt at making the fish appear calico. I have seen in references made to white comets, so I know not all the white ones are called shubunkins. There are 3 variants with in the variety of shubunkin with different fin morphs, perhaps that is what you are thinking of? The London shubunkin has the same finnage as the common goldfish, and the Bristol shubunkin has a large caudal fin with rounded lobes. American shubunkins have a slimmer body shape than the london shubunkin with deeply forked, pointed tail fins, and longer fins all around like a comet.

I dont hate goldfish, but i would never ever keep them.
They are the very symbol of, hybrids, line bred and man made fish.
They seem to be created as living ornaments and dont seem to have the cunning or powerfullnes of almost any other fish in the market.

Ps. I agree with Thalan

I'm gonna let you finish, but
FH is one of the best hybrids of all time, of all time!
jk, i really like GF

I don't shed any tears over the existence of goldfish, but I definately would NEVER EVER own one (or any). I think goldfish are dirty, ugly fish. They poop ALL the time. They aren't very interesting to watch/ look at/ clean up after. And the anatomies of the different variations of goldfish are VERY disturbing and "unnatural-looking." Those ones with the brain-looking mass on top of their heads? The tripod ones? The bubble eye ones? Ugh...They freak me out.

Plus almost every bad fishkeeper with a poorly maintained tank that I've seen has been infested with goldfish that don't fit in the tank. I am NOT saying that goldfish are kept exclusively by inexperienced, lazy, or poor fishkeepers, I am just saying that IME, seeing the goldfish I've seen in the environments in which I have seen them, has not helped to change my distaste for goldfish.

Kudos to all of you that do own and love goldfish, though. This hobby is all about personal preference. If you love 'em, keep lovin' 'em. That's the glory of aquariums!

I love my goldfish, they are soo cute when they eat out of my hand and dash around my pond.... They do have a personality, and even though many people have had goldfish they are still a amazing fish for any level fish keeper, they are a ancient fish that should be respected like their cousins the koi. Once you go goldfish you won't turn back lol!

How are they ancient? They've only been around for MAYBE 5000 years. Sure that's a long time, but compare that to real (Non-inbred) fish . And you'll think goldfish are cool until you run into predatory fish from places like South America.

Let's respect each other's views and avoid debates over personal preferences please, folks.

As stated, if it weren't for the associations with poorly managed tanks, careless novices and horrid smells and poops in under-maintained tanks, I think goldies would have a better chance of earning a more solid reputation among 'advanced' fishkeeping. Of course, goldfish are a demanding fish, so it takes a specialist to get it right. And since every pet store seems to have them, somebody must be buying them. And two weeks later buying them again. And again. :(

Knifegill, you're right. A lot of fancy varieties are not actually easy to keep. They're prone to health issues so I always check my goldfish for signs of illnesses in order for me to immediately correct it before it gets worse. Luckily, the goldfish recover almost quickly for me whenever they get ill or injured suddenly. I've treated their bacterial infections, parasites, tumor and a few other issues accordingly plus that dang surgery for the tumor which was very tricky to do. I bought some of them and they were skinny at that time. I'm just happy they look much better later on.:)
