Goldfish hating.

Just because we are monster fish keepers, it doesn't mean we have to start this stereotyping garbage again. Let's just agree to disagree and avoid the stereotyping and personal debates. Each person can freely state their own views but refrain from turning this into a personal debate.

have you raised any goldfish yourself to say they have no personality??

many goldfish keepers will tell you, and have posted already, goldies can be extremely active, get to know their owners, and will follow you all around a room, come right upto the glass or just chill in a corner watching you. they do the same things as any other fish we all keep, except actively hunt other fish. and even that, ive had a few goldfish over the years that would swallow ANY fish it could get into its mouth, be it goldfish or other species.....

the rarer, and more exotic varieties of goldfish also present some amazing colors and finnage, once again, letting them rival many other fish we keep for looks, and maybe surpass some. when you think about it, theres not many other fish who can have such long, flowing tails as a goldfish, which is quite nice to watch while their swimming around in a large enough tank/pond. when their not inbred or sick, their very graceful swimmers and quite enjoyable to watch as a change to our fast moving, sometimes hard to focus on predators

Of course i have!! my 1st fish, after my betta ate it and all my guppies:cry:! Goldfish do get big and somewhat pretty but aren't the best in my choice.

these are the stupidest statements in this thread. :screwy: who are you to tell people what to put in the ponds THEY made? and last time i checked, goldfish werent growing legs and walking out of ponds. and if a flood will carry a goldfish to another body of water, then you got more things to worry about than a goldfish. and animals carrying a goldfish somewhere else and then letting it go? OMGWTFBBQ :screwy:

and i agree with Liz. most of us are here because of goldfish. i have no problem with them. and to go as far and say you "hate" goldfish, thats just a little pathetic. if you hate goldfish, then you need to get out more and get a LIFE
Wow dude I know this is some what of an old post but where do you get of? I was simply saying what I thought and you blaze me for it. I know its not a regular thing for goldfish to be removed from there little ponds but you cant dismiss the fact that it can and does happen. Maybe a heron goes into the pond and and gets some eggs stuck to it then it moves to another body of water a few seconds away and the eggs fall off. The possibilities are endless. Gold fish could spread as easily as carp if given the chance.

:iagree: Well said, mate.:)

My 7" black oranda Summers was very timid at first when I introduced him to my 75g tank where he met a few other goldfish that are smaller than him except my lionhead, Julian. Everytime I approached the tank, he would freak out and immediately swim back to his corner much to my frustration since I was hoping after a few weeks, he would already be accustomed to my presence. That's over now though since he appeared to have gather so much confidence that he now begs to me for food and nibbles my fingers. He once tried to bite my vacuum cleaner and followed it around as I siphon their poop.:WHOA:

Here's his picture. Not the best but you get the idea of how he looks like.

I agree, Liz. They are cute by nature. Actually the original goldfish were simply singletails and have a much more streamlined body. They are much more adept, versatile and feistier. The "exotic" varieties were developed by selective breeding and these ones are considered "fancy". These ones are also more prone to health issues than anything else due to the compressed bodies and GI tract that hindered their ability to survive in harsh conditions in the process.

I can understand goldfish is not for everyone but consider this. We also have plenty of other fish already selectively bred. Livebearers, flowerhorns, blood parrots and many others are no different to the selectively bred goldfish.
you hit the nail on the head about why i dont like fancies, theres to much form over function, and in the end its bad for the animal. not that they arent interesting in there own right tho.

My pond is a 300 gal rubbernaid .. my fish come in every fall and go out in the spring... i am sure that most hand made ponds are made like this.. the one we build for goldfish... and nothing but our goldfish..View attachment 382009
what your totally being negligent they will clearly ricochet off your frog statue and then use the inertial force of earths rotation to make in to the nearest pond. lol

i really enjoy comets and other sleek goldfish. i started with goldfish. then went through almost every other type of fish in the hobby, i got the itch for lack of a better phrase. the only types of fish i havent kept are south american cichlids and massive predators fish. and now im back to goldfish 7 yrs later, as there just enjoyable fish, that are relaxing. thats not to say i wont be looking into acquiring other types of fish in the future, specifically discus and sunfish(wild ones near me look like crap), but ive decided my goldfish tank is here to stay.

Goldfish have Polaroid eyes, say scientists

Polarised vision could aid navigation

Goldfish have specialised eyes, which have the same impact as wearing Polaroid sunglasses, to help them catch their prey.
Scientists at the University of Manchester say light sensitive cells in the fish's retina are able to detect polarised light, improving contrast, and this specialised form of vision also seems to be present in most species of fish they have tested.

"If you are a young salmon hunting food such as water fleas, they are transparent and not easy to see," said Dr Nicholas Roberts of the university. But if the fish eye is sensitive to polarised light, "it is actually quite amazing how it improves the contrast." It is also possible that polarised vision could aid the navigation of some species, such as salmon.
The researchers say this latest research is important because it is the first direct experimental evidence of a polarisation detection mechanism in vertebrates - backboned creatures. "Just as fishermen wear Polaroid sunglasses to help improve contrast, many different animals - including fish - have evolved to do the very same thing without the need of sunglasses," said Dr Roberts. " It is a surprisingly common ability throughout the animal kingdom."
He hopes that it may lead to new developments in robot vision or information display technologies.
The findings are published today in the Biophysical Journal.
