Goldfish hating.

Dislike maybe... hate? The word is used to lightly these days. Aristotle viewed hate as a desire for the annihilation of an object that is incurable by time.

People kill the things they hate, like roaches. I have not met anyone sane that would buy goldfish just to torture and kill them for fun.

I started off with goldfish and loved them when I was a kid, but they don't interest me anymore. I've become a sadistic pompous fish keeper that prefers more exotic monsterfishes, which have the propensity to rip other fish to shreds.

The truth is that the majority of people would look upon monster fishes tearing apart their pray as far more grotesque and deformed.

I accept my love for monster fish as a strange fetish, rather than be like some insecure people who try to normalize their likes and dislikes by calling the poor goldfish silly names.

I think putting them in a tank designed specifically for them changes the way the behave and it becomes more "natural".

I didn't realise there were so many people who dislike goldfish to this extent. Goldfish in the aquarium hobby/life style is the basis on which it all started. Kind of what grass is to a garden. it's where it all started for me with my goldfish breeding for pet shops on our farm when I was 12. Made good money from it.

I love lionheads. Not only are they from ancient bloodlines, but they are the first fish that were genetically bred for certain traits. Another thing: isn't the oldest fish in the Guiness Book of Records a goldfish?

With tropical fish like angel fish for instance, they have become very weak due to years of inbreeding. The goldfish however remain as tough as nails despite centuries of inbreeding.

If a 12" tinfoil barb, 6" silver dollar or 12" bala shark are considered monster, then why are goldfish not? All those fish only swim around aimlessly, poop and eat. Silver dollars are so skittish a sudden movement near the tank sends them into a frenzy of flying gravel and bumped glass. To me, that is a dumb fish.

Just my 2c.

The oldest as far as I know is 43 years old but koi has been recorded with an agre range of 140-200 years old with a certain "Hanako" as the oldest so far at 200 years. I was skeptical by it at first when it was discussed in AC last week. Here's the discussion thread for koi. Both koi and goldfish are called carp since they share many similarities even though they are distinctive.:)
Koi lives to be 200 years old?

Not all goldfsh are like that. It's true the majority are indeed tough but a few ones such as tosakins owing to their fused caudal lobes are far too delicate. The problem is aggravated by their fused caudal lobes which make them very poor swimmers. This prevents them from competing well with other goldfish.

I agree. Your statements are well reasoned so far, Cockroach and I admire you for balancing your opinions unlike some other views here that directly throw darts at goldfish, whether they tried the fish or not.

I've kept all those fish you mentioned before. I am very disappointed despite their monstrous size, all three are extremely skittish to the point they'd crash on anything that they are a danger to themselves.

i have 2 danio that survive with a green terror, once every other week i buy 5 and they always get eating except these 2 which r now about 3in ...lol

as for gold fish, i guess they are alright depending on which kind it is. I have seen them get fairly huge (9-11 in) and can be peaceful to watch. I just reather raise other types of fish that u just dont see every day :)

Nice read thanks Lupin. I have read a few articles of those river fed ponds with 200 year old koi. Although, like yourself have never read anything conclusive on the subject.

Living here in Asia I have seen what top quality goldfish look like and some of them are stunning. A good quality fancy goldfish can fetch as much as US$200.

Just wait til you have a feeder that just won't get eaten. You'll fall in love with goldfish again.
This statement is so true! I have two RCOs that were bought as feeders, one has a "nemo" fin as a result. Now they have a tank to themselves and have become a family fav. Some days I even spend more time watching them then my "monster" fish:screwy:

I started with 6 to cycle my 120 and 4 quickly became Bichir food but these 2 survived somehow..

your very hard to please. lol most fish do atleast one of those things.

i like goldfish, the large "deformed" ones were selectively bred by the chinese to look interesting from above since they only had ponds when this was happening. That is why they look moderately better from above than from the side. that is based on personal preference though. i personally think that they are interesting
