Goldfish hating.

I see goldfish the same way I see guppies, tetra's,platy's and the like. Their just small boring fish. They just swim around.....that's it. No personality at all.

What's with all the hating on goldfish?

1. Goldfish brought you into this hobby.
2. Goldfish made this hobby much more popular.
3. Goldfish are just like any other fish.

For an inexperience goldfish keeper and an untrained eye of a person looking at a fancy goldfish...they all are ugly to YOU. Me personally, I think they are pretty cool. Goldfish are not made to be monsters and eat this and kill that and fight that. Goldfish are made for looks as part of a house decoration. Heck, this hobby started out as a home decoration only but it got so popular it turned into a hobby.
This is like an angry mob here on this thread, when someone jumps in on something. Everyone follows after, and what does the fish being wild has anything to do with fish keeping? Have you guys ever heard of the term...domesticated animals? Point out where domesticated animals aren't selectively bred? Cows, pigs, chickens or whatever you name it. EVEN DOGS.

Word for word, selective breeding of goldfish is to make them look much more cute and cooler than the previous plain ole goldfish. I can understand why most people bash on goldfish, because they are not monsters...well, what does monster has anything to do with having a fish to be aggressive, real great personality that EVERYONE can notice, being very picky about food etc etc etc. Aren't GIANT SIZE goldfish is suppose to be classified as a ]\/[ONSTER?
AND about non native species in the pond and being scared that the fish might escape into the wild, WHAT KIND OF UNEDUCATED THINKING IS THAT? First of all...if the fish is able to escape into the wild and take over the damn entire river or lake or ecosystem. I don't think the fish would be legal in the first place. Example: Piranhas being illegal in California because they can thrive in the water.
What the hell does a goldfish going to do in the wild? Eat every single species and compete out against the other? Is a goldfish really that aggressive and will kill and ruin the entire ecosystem? Or is the goldfish even going to last a week in the river/lake water system before getting eaten' by a bass or a catfish? I don't know...you tell me.

Bottom line is, goldfish are cool to their own perspective...suck it up and start training the inexperience keeping of goldfish and untrained eye of goldfish keeping. Have a nice day...and night :D

Have you actually kept goldfish, Packer? If so, how long was your experience? Small and boring? That's a far out description actually. Could you please define what is "small" to you? I keep goldfish myself and my collection comprises a few large ones with my latest black oranda being the biggest at almost 8 inches in length not including its 2-3" flamboyant caudal fin. The body width is 3.5 inches. My next largest is also bulky at 7 inches in length yet the same body width. For the inexperienced ones, that is already something else to think of. A question comes to mind, "Are goldfish really suitable in fish bowls?"

As for lack of personality as you alleged, I disagree. My goldfish have mood shifts sometimes. They can get disgruntled suddenly but at times, they excitedly anticipate your approach when they start sensing it's feeding time. They will also handfeed readily if they can recognize you.;)

Small? Boring? Somebody hasn't had a pet goldfish recently...

I like monster fish, I tried goldfish but my lfs didn't have those fat wobbly cute ones, only not feed comets that looked like swimming orange bones...

Funny your avatar is of a striped Raphael and you say goldfish are boring.

Out of all the goldfish I kept... none have been boring.

At one time I did choose Cichlids over them. Where did it get me? Having to buy more and more tanks... many other dead fish. To me it seems Cichlids are boring the only thing on their mind is kill..kill...kill!

I came back to goldfish so I can relax with my hobby. If I want violence I can always turn on the TV.

Personally I only like commons but I don't hate the fancies... or call them boring.

I enjoy goldfish. I do use them as food, but because there was a few goldfish that just survived, they have their own tank now. I am rescuing three goldfish tomorrow from someone taht can handle them (they are 2 inches haha)
I also like them since I saw on mythbuster that you can train them haha. I am a fan of most fish. Not a big fan of most cichlids. I like convicts and some malawis and the really large cichlids.
Anyway,lol.
+1 for goldfish

Experience is just from keeping a few here and there. So not much experience. IDK, some just look a little weird with the brain like masses on top of their head and the plain goldfish.

I must say though I do like the black ones with the bubbly eyes. How big do they get? I wouldn't mind having a 55 of them with a white background.:) But the other ones just either freak me out or just look plain, IDK maube it's because their orange.
