Goldfish produce 3x the ammonia/waste of tropical fish of equal mass. True or false?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I certainly can attest that 2 5 inch goldfish produce more waste than a 8 inch oscar, a 6 inch black ghost knife and an 8 inch senegal bichir combined. Not too long ago, I moved my trio of oscar, bichir and BGK to another tank and put in my wife's 2 overgrown feeder comets and they definitely dirtied up the tank a lot more. I am trying now to feed them less, to see if they will produce less waste.

feeder comets are produced for there ability to grow fast and reproduce quickly.

I believe that would have an effect on there ability to consume food effectively.

Feeders aren't really produced for anything just parent goldfish stuffed with Hormones so they'll breed over and over....All goldfish grow quickly....

Excellent Post Lupin good reads

No, they don't. And you do have a valid point on that.

Here's the internal anatomy article for goldfish. For those who are squeamish with necropsy, you're warned.;)

And here's an interesting one. Even though the goldfish excrete wastes as fast as they eat, a large portion remains undigested in which case they try to chew and swallow again until everything is digested. Gross but it's true.

More articles below for digestion and nutrition.

you just blew my mind!

Everyone missed the most obvious. Gold fish are a cold water fish so if kept in a tropical setting then yes they are going to produce more waste cause the warmer temps speed up there matabulism. If you want them to produce waste like they should put a chiller on the tank and keep there temp around the low to mid 60s

Actually, not all goldfish are really coldwater. It depends what you mean by coldwater. A lot of fancy varieties have been raised in warmer temperature (74-80 degrees) since most stocks were bred in Asia especially in the tropics. Doesn't really apply to all goldfish. All the same they will still produce more wastes due to inefficient digestive system.

true i was mainly referring to the "feeder" comets

it was my understanding that carp are coldwater fish, and even tho goldfish are a breed of carp because of the way they've been raised in the last 200 years they are temperate fish...room temperature or warmer

fantails and other fancy fish require a higher temperate to help them grow.

Real cold water fish are like pike that need to be under 19 degrees and can require a chiller in warmer climates. afaik.

So, keeping feeder goldfish in a unheated tank hinders there ability to process food and generates more waste
