When I was younger, I won a comet goldfish from some carnival game. We took it home, and put it into a bigger container of water. The next day, my father and I go out to buy supplies to keep it alive. Knowing nothing about fishkeeping, we asked an employee what size tank we would need. They recommended a 10 gallon, so that's what we got. It stayed in that tank for the rest of its life.
That fish lived for 7 years, and grew to 8 inches long. Most of the time it was alone in the tank. I feel bad for it, but at least I know better now.
My sister won the male common I have now at a carnival I beleive back in 2000. He spent a good 3 years with another goldfish in a 2 gallon hex. Water changes when the water got so dirty you couldnt see them, but that ment a 100% scrub down. Iv had him for the past 2 years or so in my 55, 7" or so. Dont know if he is stunted or not, but I am sure he is alot happier being able to swim around with friends.
I just found out that my new Mantis Shrimp also LOVES goldfish! He even invited one to come play underneath my sand bed with him...must be having fun because it still hasent come out!
JK but really Mantis Shrimp
I will admit that my Girlfriend once decided to save one of my feeder goldfish that had previously been inside two other fish that both decided they were too full. She named him lucky for obvious reasons...I did take a liking to him
Goldfish are awesome. The people who hate them have never given them adequate tank size and care. They need a big tank and many water changes, but they are so awesome!
My girl friend bought some gold fish a while back. If it weren't for that, I would never have gotten into the hobby! She researches a lot about Chinese and Japanese culture regarding goldfish. It's very interesting. If I recall correctly, you're supossed to keep 9 fish total, and one of them is black. The black goldfish absorbs the bad luck in the house. I'm currently looking at ways to upgrade our goldfish tanks from two 10 gallons to maybe one 29.
Also, I'm sure you guys knew this, but the arowana is considered good luck as well.
