My goliath snapps his jaws really fast a few times and then starts to shake his head like crazy and catapultes forward very fast. Then he is ok for a minute and repeats the same thing over again. At times he jawns as well and shakes his head. Any ideas what could be causing that? He is the only one in the tank doing this.

Can't do a video he gets to paranoied and won't let me. Besides you wont see anything else then what i've said that he does. Video comes in handy when there are visual signs like fungus, bacterial infection etc.

That could be some kind of threat display.I realize they are only distantly related but my armatus sometimes does something similar when another fish happens to move a little too close to my armatus for his liking. He'll snap his jaws and even give a little push with his snout if the imposing fish does not take the hint lol.

If that was the case he probably wouldn't do it all the time all day long and when there are no fish around. It seems like some kind of a skin or gill parasite that he is wanting to get rid off. I have read that fish do that when the water parameters are not to their liking but my water is fine and the fact that he is the only one doing it should exclude that option.

Oh okay,in your opening post you did not say that he was doing it all the time, all day long.Good luck with whatever it might be.

Yeah sorry about that. Thanks for the help! I hope we figure out what is going on. I hate seeing him like this.

Is he cutting teeth?

I've seen behavior like this out of all five species of atf when they're shedding their old teeth and growing in new ones.

I'll post up some pics when I get on my PC later.

Hmmm i have no idea. He wont let me get close to check him out. But he was in a tank that i suspect that he cought something since a few other fish that went in that tank were ok before getting in it and after started doing the same thing. I took one of those fish to a microbiologist and he took some samples and checked under the microscope. We didn't see anything at all. I still did a few medication cycles against bacteria, external/internal parasites....Nothing helped. It has me confused.

Sounds like you may have most of the bases covered already. It sounds to me like teeth shedding for the GATF; without being able to be there and see I really can't say for sure though.

Here's some pics of Max at ~9" going through a shedding cycle. When he was shedding teeth, he would always act similarly to how you describe and would become very easily spooked while also becoming more aggressive to his tankmates. The pics below were taken over the course of a few days and are ordered chronologically from starting to lose teeth to new teeth erupting through the gingival tissue to the final setting of the teeth.
