Absolutely its what we are all here for! I am privileged to have one that has attained its present size. However it did reside in an 8x4 tank from 15" to just about 2 feet. Once it got to the point where the tank was more of a liability for his size and damaging himself it came time to upgrade the tank. I moved him into the fiberglass tank 3+ yrs ago. That is where he has reached the size he is now which is getting closer to 40". I did have some issue with him in there too and they were my fault. He actually jumped out x2 once 3 yrs ago and once less then a yr ago. I immediately changed the netting from the cheap **** plastic koi nets to a mesh one that is much stronger and wont allow him to push thru. I do recommend 100% utilizing a round tank of a decent size. Mine is 1500 but I would have like to have gone bigger but the space wont allow that unfortunately. So to accommodate him I have minimized the tank mates that reside with him now to 80% being bottom fish besides the flagtail that he tolerates that's 18" and 10+ yrs old. He has given it a few nips but for the most part leaves it be. For anyone wanting to follow this path my #1 piece of advice is the following....KEEP THE TIGER THE #1 PRIORITY OVER ANYTHING ELSE! that goes for tank mates, feedings, activities around the tank, etc. Also nothing that is aggressive as well. If anything changes, tank mates, water chems, activity around the tank, lighting etc u risk the possibility of it shutting down or making it very difficult for one to deal with. He has gone on hunger strikes and it took me 2 months to get him eating normally from the last time he jumped out. Again each time it was my fault not the fish's!Very cool. Thank you for blazing a trail for us noobs in the game.
do you have any advice for future prospect gatf owners? I know you mentioned a circular tank which makes sense.
I have heard they don’t move tanks well after a certain size, but you mention you got this one at 15”? Did it go straight into the tank it is currently in or did you upgrade it as it got bigger. What I have read on here is to not have too big of a tank so it doesn’t have the space to get too much speed?...
Thank you for sharing your story here.
The flagtail is probably a great fit because they like to mimic other fish, so it is like a non aggressive gatf friend for him, until he decides he looks too much like a tfb ?. Very cool thank you again for sharing this beast with us. Just letting us all know, that it can be done!!Absolutely its what we are all here for! Ty I appreciate it! I've done the best I could to get him to the size he is now. It wasn't easy and I had to sacrifice certain things in order to have what I do now. Stocking is very calculated after making some mistakes as u have seen in the posts above of his casualties. I would imagine Jeremy would be proud to see a thriving mbengah!Wowfishtankphil ,
I don't think I've seen such a ferocious and nasty fish since I've seen your Goliath.
Just the teeth alone tells me to stay the f@#$ away. That is an amazing and rare fish you have. I can't believe the size of the teeth alone. He looks so menacing in the pics. I'm sure Jeremy Wade from River Monsters would be proud. Lol. Sorry about your Arowana and the other victims that have been murdered. You have a very cool tank as well. Keep up the good work growing him out.
