good breeding fish

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I think it's a bad idea.
Most home breeders that are selling anything don't make much, considering the time and money put in. It sometimes is worth it to them because they are getting store credit to funnel back into their hobby. So they can buy more fish or food or equipment or whatever.
But they are only breeding anything of value because they have already invested much time and money getting set up. Baby fish are just a byproduct of the hobby they are already invested in. So why not sell the byproduct if it is there to be used? The byproduct does not really cost them anything, just the time and money they have invested anyway.
But you are saying you just want ways to make money. And you happen to have some limited equipment because you happen to be a starting small time hobbyist.(no offense, I'm pretty small time too) And can you realistically use this to make money reliably?
No you can't. Not real money. And not reliably.
And what very very little you make, if you actually get anything to breed, if you actually can sell any, will go back into the business.
So yes you can breed easily bred (and thus worthless) fish and sell them for next to nothing, or for limited store credit.
But that is not your goal at the moment.
You don't want to make $.0002/hr. You want real money.
You don't want to invest money you don't have to buy equipment you don't otherwise need.
You don't want store credit, because you only need that if you happen to be breeding and expanding in the hobby.
You just want money.
This is probably not the best, sure fire, reliable way to make money.
Not for you. Not now.
You can be a small time hobbyist, and make a small return on your investment. If you happen to be doing this anyway.
But it is not the best business plan. You have no guarantee of return. And any return is guaranteed to be limited. And likely less than invested.
Honestly if I had a 13yr old kid looking for cash I'd first advise them to go cut grass, weed gardens, paint a house, run errands, walk dogs, recycle cans, start a bogus charity, build a fence, sell stolen cars for scrap metal, pick up groceries for elderly shut-ins,open a lemon aid and vodka stand...whatever you can think of.
Yes you are under age. But you can start your own business and work for yourself. The government does not care about you or how you get pocket money.
I have no idea of your population center or how safe it is. But you might get a few friends together so you can knock on doors without getting kidnapped. A few of you could blanket large neighborhoods in a weekend. And do whatever odd jobs you can find. Clean a garage, bury the dead cat, burn witches, lasso rats, move a couch,...whatever people don't want to do and will throw you a few bucks for.
Just remember that the more friends you add the more mouths to feed. But it might be worth it for safety and the possibility of getting larger and better paying jobs.
Also, in this day and age I'd definitely have at least on partner. With a cell phone. So while you are negotiating the deal, your buddy can be reporting back to home base (where you are, the address, what time you will be finished etc. The report does not have to be real. But the customer should overhear it and think it's real, so they don't get any whacko ideas)

P.S. I was joking about the illegal stuff. Don't do that. Ever. Never ever.
But if you were MY kid...

Edit: Try to build a customer base if possible. Repeat business.
Like...can you mow the lawn not just today, but every two weeks? Then you spend more time working and less time looking for work.
And if you have bookings, you can just drop by quick after school on the way home.

Maximize your time, Maximize your profit.
I think that's about the 237th Rule of Acquisition.

That's a Ferengi joke. Never mind.

In a 20 gallon you can have one pair and let them parent raise
most pet stores will actually give you money for angelfish, they are always in demand
once you get it right you have a pretty good supply
notice I said decent not superior
pet stores (in general) aren't selling to the advanced hobbiest, angelfish are a bread and butter fish
most pet stores want them at nickel to quarter size but .50 a fish is pretty cheap and i only go that low on mine if i need to empty a tank and they are taking a lot
but i often hear "I'll take all the angels you've got"

you will need a 10 gallon for fry and then something like a 50 for a growout
although to make real money you have to spend real money
and i think that the aquarium hobby is feeling the pinch right now
At 13, 50 bucks a month can go a ways and that would show your parents you have a going thing
Oh and a lot of hobbiest will get you started very cheap with an older pair depending on your area

Generally, fish breeding is not a profitable occupation. However, unless you are an extremely mature 13-year-old with a good job, I assume your parents will be paying the electricity and water bills. (Us kids have that advantage:D, I'm 16.)
South american dwarf cichlids are cool, and pet stores will always take them.

Or killies. Most of them are easy breeders, but a bit expensive if you want substantial breeding stock. And they tend to like slightly smaller living quarters, and would probably get lost in a 30. Small plastic storage bins work well (5-10 gallons), you can drill a hole in the lid for a tube for a sponge filter. (Killies are jumpers, no open top.) And, you do have to store the eggs of annual spawner for 3 weeks to a year, but that is relatively easy.

Well let's see,Convicts,Angelfish,Severums. In general cichlids.

Bristlenoses? they would probably be in a fair demand, the fry are quite easy to raise, they are easy to breed and if u got an albino or long fin type and bred them u'd get a lot more ££. obviously the initial cost would be higher if u went for an albino or long fin but u'd get a higher income eventually.

Find an excellent line of guppies. I know a breeder that lives not far from me that makes a killing off of a pure red strain he has. He can't produce enough of them to keep up with the demand for them ;)

I would also suggest EBJD but not sure how much longer they are going to hold their value. There are getting to be too many people producing them.

But for someone your age I would suggest kribs. Most pet stores sell them for $5-$10 and they are easy to breed and raise the fry. Plus there seems to be a pretty good demand for them.

I think it was too much for him, he hasn't been back in 3 weeks

im going to try bristlenose plecos in my 20 gallonlong and they sell for 15 in the lfs so i should get like 3-7 dolars a fish so i htink bn plec's would work good
