The tank will be 300 gallons and the stocklist will include...

1) 6" jack Dempsey
1) 6" green terror
1) 4" convict
1) 4" firemouth
1) 6"festae
1) 6-8" managuense
1) 5" L204
1) 7-8" L114

I know most folks suggest silver dollars for target(dither) fish, but I was thinking of adding maybe 4-5 more convicts instead. Ideally, they would provide a source of live food and serve as dithers. You guys think this would work? I know they get pretty aggressive when breeding, but the tank is pretty large and the mates will be pretty sturdy, so it seems like it might work. Any other suggestions or ideas welcome! Thanks

try a school of 6-10 clown loaches

I think 2 or 3 pairs of breeding convicts would be fine in your tank... if you get the size right. Big enough that they don't become food and small enough that they can't seriously harm your other fish.

Convicts as food? For what?! haha

Convicts breed almost constantly and are small enough to house a lot of em in a 300 gal. Their fry would serve as live food for everything else.

The only problem with clown loaches is im trying to keep all the stock from CA/SA species. That's kinda why I figured cons. They'd be big enough to fend for themselves and would breed like crazy. All male suggestion is interesting...

i also feel like that many clown loaches would be too much even for an aquairum of that size.

I'd definitely go with the extra convicts. Convicts breed like crazy and are super tough

How about 2 or 3 pairs of firemouths. Less aggressive than the cons and make good targets. I have also had good luck with buenos aires tetras. They make good dithers, breed like rabbits and look a lot like asyanax species from CA.
