If you want good, inexpensive filtration for a 55g tank, use two AC70's or one AC110 (or a comparable canister filter).

Using anything else in addition to that is just wasting electricity and wasting a big filter for more water movement, because its not likely to be doing any kind of bio filtration unless the tank is horrendously overstocked. If you want more water movement, just get a couple powerheads.

lol no it wont be overstocked im hoping the tank will only be a EBJD (single), or a salvini pair?, or a firemouth community..im still working it out for myself lol;)

A penguin 350 should be fine for that tank. If you feel you want to upgrade or change the filtration, I'd go for an AquaClear or a midrange canister, like an Ehiem 2215. They can be gotten for under $100, and provide plenty of filtration for a 55g tank, plus they're very easy to maintain.

I have the same question about a year ago and I went with 2 Emperor 400's on my 55G and it works great.

Easy to maintain and gives you options for additional mechanical filtration via the extra cartridge slots.

thnx and can i ask where do you live in AZ? cause my side of fam lives there..

If you plan on using HOB filters I think 2 are needed if you have a fully stocked tank. I think a couple aquaclear 110s or fluval C4s are perfect. I have an emperor 400 with filter pads in the 1st slot and the second media slots full of biomax, the second HOB is a whisper 60 that is full of 4 bags of bio max with a couple air stones for strictly bio filtering. The filters came free with the tank so that is what I used. Otherwise I would just get the 4 stage knockoff canister filters on ebay that come with all the media and hoses needed for $80.
