I am hunting a motoro pup to go in my tank. It will be a solo ray with a grouping of 4x G. Abalios and 4x G. Dicrozoster. I found a wild caught 5" pup for $150, not sure of sex but wondering if this is on the more expensive side? This will be the first ray I have owned and to be honest the price tag is a bit of a sticker shock. Most I have ever paid for a fish is in the $30 range, so this is a big purchase for me.

Any downsides to a wild caught pup? The tank is a 220 with sand substrate, MB 55gall sump with about 1350GPH going through it. Will be moving it to 96x36x24 or 96x36x30 in a year or so, will the 220 be ok for a 5" pup for the next 12-18 months? I do weekly 60-75% water changes.

Go with a male if going solo as females get very large. Price isn't bad. Motoros seem to be a little harder to come by now with home breeders few and far between. You may want to contact Trins tropical fish on fb or her website. She is currently going to bring in some motoros and price may be a little better.

$150 is about normal for motoro pups here. I'd say fair price if you don't want to order online as stated above. Also, WC have a high high high chance of internal parasites so have meds on hand to treat regardless of whether the pup shows symptoms or not.

Ok, so I am in the works of getting it all worked out. They are fairly certain the pup is a male, they have had it since April 1st and stated that it is eating very well and doesn't appear to have any parasites or any symptoms of sickness.

if it has claspers its a male, should be able to tell no problem. Like I said, just because there aren't symptoms doesn't mean there aren't parasites. I'd treat regardless.

It is an online order, so I am unable to check but she seemed fairly certain it was a male.

I have a 36 gallon bowfront as my QT tank, would I be ok to place it in there and go ahead and treat for any parasites? What kind of meds do you recommend and how long should he be in QT? I hate to stress him twice, but I also do not want to treat a 220 gallon tank full of healthy fish for parasites.

Thanks!

I got two motoros from a member on here and were captive bred. 100 each. I've seen them at lfs as high as 175$ around me.

When you start to get into more rays black Rays will be in the thousands lol

I found it very hard to find hystrix around me at that time so I went with motoros.

Well, so I originally was going to get a retic, but every article I read said Motoro was hardier. Frankly as a first ray, $150 is my max I want to spend, nobody around me carries or will even bother to order a ray, so I am very limited on what I can get. The other 5-6" pups I have found are all in the $150 + shipping range. So I am at the max I want to spend
