i just recently purchased an aro as well, hes a jardini and i read that they are less likely to develop DE then silvers does anyone know whether or not this is true? also if head trauma is a possible culprit of the disease does anyone know of any sort of foam or something i could use to put under the hood that way if he does jump the impact wont be as great, so far hes skittish when i come near the tank but i other then quickly swimming away i have yet to see him attempt to jump or thrash around in the tank
no worries... so far it is rarely heard that a jardini gets drop eye...we are still all waiting for a safe non chemical, inexpensive way to protect the arow from jumping and hitting the top with his head or his body.... jars do jump too.. not as likely... but still tape up every hole that is visible and put weight on top for good measure...

alright thank you. i was wondering, is there any proof that silvers dont also get drop eye in the wild? because when i was a the shedd aquarium in chicago their silver aro there had drop eye and he was in a tank that had to be at least 5000+ gallons and it also had no top so there woulda been no way for him to get head trauma and aside from the front panel of glass all the other sides of the tank were plastic ground that were rounded. so i was thinking that it could just be defect in both wild and captive aros

wow thats a great question.. the thing is ... he could have been added to the tank ...with drop eye... he may not have been in that environment since a baby.... otherwise i would sure like to know about the older ones in the wild... smart that you even thought of this... good question... no answer yet..:grinno:

I have a near 18" Silver Aro with perfect eyes but I don't know if it's mature yet. If he stays like that when he hits 20+ then I'll post a picture. He's the smallest aro out of my 3 but perfect:)

wonderful... how big is the tank.. are they all together..... love to see pics...please... this is great news.

1. I got them as a baby.
2. The light is on for 12 hrs, from 11 to 23
3. Dump in lots of feederfishes once a week.
4.Tankmates are bichirs.
5. One is in 180gal, the other is in 100gal.
6. I do water change once a week, (occasionally two weeks).
7. The RTG started to develop DE while it's 18" (about 15 degree downward). I covered tank glass with black plastics, and it recovered two months later. Then I moved those plastics, it started DE again, and forced me to cover the tank since then.
It's 20" when it passed away during a power down accident.
