That is an outstanding picture! I hate to ask this because I'm very concerned about the drop eye issue but what kind of camera did you use LOL Again I'm sorry.

So far I have not seen a silver with OUT drop eye after 24 inches. Captive bread or wild caught. All of them seem to get it? I wonder if it's some kind of hole in the head thing associated with bad water quality?

i do not think it has much to do with quality of water.....of course thats #1 important.. i believe the trauma of hitting the top is causing it .. and they all jump...

Just an update, Liz

1. 2 out of 3 silver aros got DE in one eye each ... hmm getting worse i think. One is still hanging-on DE free. All are almost 3' now. I would go with the head trauma theory. Arapaimas have been jumping and spooking tank mates alot lately - time to move i think (much gashes on them and silvers due to jumping)
2. None of the asians got DE so far
3. Black aro no DE
4. Jar is DE free too

don't know if any help, 3 pics of my malay x back 22" 2.5 yrs old fed on only market prawn, in 260 gallon tank with black back, tank mates just short body barbs, fei feng.

actually i have 4 others in white tanks, clear tanks as well, and some around 5 yrs old and still no drop eye. but everyone has their own theory on drop eye. maybe i am just lucky. enjoy the pics.

i go with it too... it just seems logical to me now... and silvers are the ones that commonly get it.

absolutely veryfine arow........wow

dont hear much DE's on asians and aussies, most are on silvers. so i assume this thread are for silvers?

I'm still going with genetics. My black aro crack the glass just as much as all my silvers did and he is DE free at 24" I think there is something genetic that is causing this in silvers
