I dont doubt you cause fishing down there is totally different then the panhandle, but the rule of thumb is no shallower then 60ft for red snaps and about 100ft for mingos. Out of Pensacola the 60ft mark is about 5mi out. The 100ft line is about 15mi out. Needless to say, the longest pier in the gulf with a max depth of 20ft at the end will never hold red snapper. Mangrove snapper are caught though and once a sailfish was landed from the pier!

Are you sure ? I have heard snappers are even caught from Key West beaches with no piers just by casting out .
I have caught some type fish called "Grunts" when I fished from a beach off Miami at night but heard they to are deeper water fish . Now I take my cell phone to take pics but havent gone saltwater fishing since than .

Im a big red snapper fisherman and not just a tourist that has taken a charter boat a few times. We have a 24' CC out of Pensacola so I know a bit about them.

Red snapper, well most all snapper period, relate to bottom structure. We will anchor up directly over a reef, wreck, live bottom, ect and drop straight down. Many times if the snapper are feeding they will be up in the column or sometimes even near the surface, but the structure is still underneath them.

If the wind shifts direction and blows the boat just a few yards off the structure its hard to even get a bite! They really do hug that structure that is why I find it very very odd that they are being caught from a beach where there is no structure.

Now mangrove snappers can be caught in very shallow water around jetties, docks, ect but being grey I wouldnt think youd confuse them with red snappers.

But maybe in S. Florida the red snappers live in shallow water along with mangroves!

FYI, my favorite setups for snappers are Penn spinning reels with 20lb mono and a short 5.5-6ft rod with a fast action but a ton of back bone. Also use tiny 2/0 or 3/0 circle hooks with a fluro leader. In the Gulf at least they are highly pressured and if they can see the hook (thats why you use a small one and bury it completely in the bait) or the line they will spook.

For the Pensacola fishing pier my one go to rod is a 7ft spnning combo loaded with 8lb line that I use for sauger fishing here in KY. Ive caught everything from spanish macks to pompano to sheapshead, blue fish, and bo-bos on it and damn is it fun!

When the kings start to show up the tackle gets heavier and line capacity gets greater!

I am no expert on fish ESP saltwater fish but these are the fish I have seen caught not far from shore this woman caught hers 250 feet out which isnt far however your right they need cover maybe they travel in closer to shore to chase fish ?

My wifes uncle lives in Key West with his interior decorating work "partner" they are both big fishermen and he tells me they catch them off the beach pier

I think you are confusing redfish with redsnapper.

Also the link you posted said they caught the fish off of Miami Beach meaning their boat was off of Miami Beach. Also notice how deep, 240ft of water, no pier from a beach will ever reach that depth.

in my opinion penn is the best "bang for your buck" very reliable and you can mistreat them like crazy and as long as you lube periodiaclly you'll never need a new one.
since noone has said it Abu Garcia are really goos as well. speaking for the reel i have(not sure what model off the top of my head) i've never had any problems and has never let me down.

id go with a penn for sure. They never break.
