For those who don't feel like clicking the link, here is a paragraph that pretty much sums it up.

"
To say his Volvo gets regular maintenance would be an understatement. Gordon admits to being persnickety about every detail, and insists his beloved car hasn't a single defect or quirk. Except for work that requires the car be on a lift, Gordon says he does most repairs and maintenance himself.
He did pay to have the engine rebuilt at 680,000 miles, even though mechanics said it was unnecessary.
"But I was nervous," he remembers, "because I didn't know of an engine that could do that."
Now, at nearly 2.7 million miles, "I'm getting nervous again, because I don't want any problems as I near 3 million.""

You're right. I just think they suck b/c of my personal experience, as well as what others tell me.

Buy a cheap car, you will own a cheap car.

I'd go with something bigger and therefore usually safer as most first cars end up junked anyhow, but this way you can get quite a bit of power (some of those 'grandma' cars made by buick and pontiac are supercharged, others v8), and they arent that much, decent on gas, and often over the top with luxurys.

One more thing about Volvos, then I will shut up about them....

They invented safety as we know it. Side airbags? Three point seatbelt? Modern-day sitting position that is in every car? Dual brake circuits? All invented by Volvo. Volvo always was the safest car out there, and recently started dipping into the luxury and sport section.

Get a V70R, if you love a powerful ride. Throws you back into your seat, smoke some M3's, and still fair better then almost every other car out there in a crash.
