Good tank setup for a few Bichirs & Rope Fish?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have 5 bichirs in my tank and they find a way to make hiding spots, like behind the intake tube or ontop of the heater. Its my Dels that do most of the hiding, my palmas, senegal, and ornate are all active and swimming about. They should be fine in there but you can always add more decor if it need be (ie make caves with lace rock or driftwood)

Yea, i made a quick tunnel thing outta some rocks, would those plants be ok to tie to this, and they grow on top of the flat rock, or would the roots eventually close up the open holes? (First 2 Images)

Also, i figured i can buy a couple cyphins from PS and use the intake tube as a hidign spot, they will hide in clear tubes, right? (Last 2 Images)

(Also, do Bichirs like to swim in the bubbles of a air stone? Most of the time, during day and night, my Del floats with the bubbles to the top, then dives head first into them to the bottom, then floats up again, etc.. Was wondering if thats normal behavior..?)

Yes it is. Young bichirs tend to float near the top to feel more secure. Id tie some moss to the clear tube and rocks. I personally like the more natural look by using rocks and odd shaped driftwood. Heres personal tank and some "hiding spots"

....and yes no serpaes have been eatten lOl

Right now they are not, its a temp shelter untill i can find a better well built structure. There are no fish in the tank right now, so its ok untill i get some in there.

If i tie moss on the tubes, will it spead along the sand and cover the tank??

Also, how did you get your tank to look darker? what kind of lights are you using? I have a blue light for the tank, if that would make a dif. I like the lighting in yours, mine is to bright imo..

The moss will probably spread but you can control that with lighting adjustments or trimming. I spray painted the back of my tank with my car paint lOl (Obsidian Black Pearl) and all the lights in my room are off. At the moment Im running a single Marineland Natural Daylight T8 bulb but I have the light lifted an inch or so away from the tank using cut pieces of sponges and is sitting towards the back portion of the tank. Also the light is sorter than the length of the tank too...

ah, thats cool then. I bought a black background piece thing, but it doesnt stand out very well, wish i wouldt thougt about spraying it..

I actually wouldnt mind a mossy bottom, but would it be dangerous to the fish?

I highly doubt it. At least now you know, Ive learned fishkeeping is about trial and error. You wont find out unless you try it. I personally like the look of my 3D background than black, but my fish's colors pop way more with the black background.

Black was my only option really. The black one was the biggest one that PS had.. So it was that or no background at all, and i dont like the whole wires drooping down look..

Have you had any experience with moss? do you know how fast it will grow, in say like a week?

I actually only have one planted tank and its a 10g but unfortunately no I personally have no experience with moss. Im sure you can search on AQ and find better result than on MFK.
