It has been a while since I have posted here, but I got a dilemma on my hands. I have a 3-4 inch EBJD that has a slight deformity on the gill plate. It wasn't like that when I bought it but it eventually developed it, and I figured that if I gave it time it would recover. It is still trying to eat and actively swimming around, but it cant eat properly. I see it swallow food but the food just falls out of the gill plate, and it has slowly become more and more emaciated. I am thinking about putting it out of its misery, but I want a humane to put it out. Should I just wrap it up and stick it in the freezer?

Thanks for your input

there is a method for using clove oil.. but i don't know exactly how it works. i'm sure someone does though, maybe do a search for clove oil?

I have tried hikari pellets, blood worms, and sinking carnivore pellets for months but it can't seem to gain weight. It is always dark, which isn't a good sign for an EBJD. What other ways can I feed it without it falling out of his gill plate? I don't want to chop its head off

Death is death, it's not pretty. Freezer wouldn't be as bad as other methods. Poison like clove oil puts them to sleep but, not very practical. Crabs, lobster, shrimp get boiled alive for us to eat. Fish are gutted while alive to eat sometimes.

Just do what you think is best for the fish and you. For the most part it will be much more humane than death in nature.

Hi. Its a horrible subject but if you think there is no other option then so be it. I have had to euthanize a fish before. I read up on it a lot before I did it. Freezing is a horrible way of doing it. It is slow and painful for the fish so it s not recommended at all.

The way I found worked best and most inhumanely was by using a high volume-based alcohol. If you find some alcohol 40% vol (80% proof) or above, just plop the fish in and it will die instantly. I felt really bad afterwards, but in the end it is for the best.

However, be aware that if it doesnt die instantly you may need to have an imediate back-up plan... maybe one as suggested above... a swift chop of a meat clever. Again, sound harsh but its the most humane way to deal with such a situation.

I would also agree Hlee above... make sure it is a LAST RESORT.

Let us know what you decide and how it goes.

if u want to put it down take it back and just cut its head off or have a friend do it it is free and like spazzoni said death is death

I know how you feel, and kudos to you about caring about your fish. I saved a panther grouper with a mouth so deformed that all he could eat was single mysis shrimp. Feeding him was not worth my time, but I did it anyways. That being said, if you think that there is nothing for this fish, then it is time to move forward in the most humane way possible.

Here is the science. Fish dont feel pain. At least not in the way that you or I do. They can tell that they are being compromised, similar to when a doctor hits you on the knee and you kick...but that is about it.

I think clove oil is impractical, but if you can find out how to do it, and gain access, I guess that works...I think that death will be more harsh than freezing the fish.

Temps are just going to slow down its metabolism. Sooner or later, it just goes to sleep...like all fish do when the cold weather comes. Most people use that method I think.

the clove oil method is if u just want to put the fish to sleep it is a drop per gallon of water watch the fish and when it goes limp it is asleep them after u are done put it back in water with no oil to wake it up. if u want to kill the fish just put more like 2 or 3 drops per gallon of water and leave it in there for like 10 minutes (u could do less i bet but i don't know the exact time for death to occur)

the fish will prolly die due to suffocation in a freezer before it freezes
