Over there
So my newest goonch randomly died today. I only had it for a month and I'm trying to figure out why it died so hopefully you guys could help. I noticed yesterday that it was yawning a lot, waaaay too much but I had no clue what that meant. Then this morning it was just sitting there not breathing so I thought it was dead but the moment I lifted it out of the water, it started moving so I placed it back in and held it in front of the powerhead. It never started breathing but I was forced to let it fend for itself cuz I had to go to class and hope for the best. When I got back, it was dead. The other 2 goonches are perfectly fine except for 1, I noticed, has some red around the anal fin. How do I treat it cuz I don't want that 1 to die and can anyone help me figure out why this 1 died. The temp is at 74-75F, 0 nitrites 0 ammonia <10ppm nitrates. They are in a 40B and the only change was that I added 3 mahseer's on Sunday to add some movement in the tank. Help me figure out this mystery please.

MAybe the mahseers had a parasite that the other goonches immune system could handle, but no tthe new one.

I don't know how this would cause the redness, but isn't your water temp a bit on the high side for a goonch? I've never kept one, but I thought they were cold water fish.

* also, I am not going to touch the idea of those fish in a 40br being any part of the problem, because I assume they are all small enough to be kept there for now and you definitely don't need to hear the "get a bigger tank" line :D

I agree that they could use a bigger tank but they need to grow a little more before they can go in the big tank. For the temp, people have had success with them in tropical temps so since the rutilus is from waters in the mid 70's to 80's, they seem happy in the middle point for both types. My main concern is what caused this 1 to die and what I can do to help the redness on the other. The rutilus has shown no signs of stress or redness like the other.

If their behavior is still normal - ie being lazy catfish and eating healthily - you could try a general antibiotic to treat the inflammation in the tail.

In regards to the mystery death, if the water conditions are good (which I m assuming they are) then the only other thing I can think of is something unusual/uncommon, like a parasite of some sort. Is there any chance you kept the dead goonch? Take a look at his gills if you did - you may be able to see something - either residual damage or an actual organism of some sort.

I do still have it. I wanna find somewhere I can bring it and keep the skull. What should I be looking for when I check the gills? It's in my freezer right now. I'll check when I get home

What pH can these cats tolerate? Gasping and streaking of the fin could be a result of improper pH.
