Goonch shedding skin/sloughing slime coat? Wth?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I've kinda just accepted it as something that they do from time to time. It seems to be caused by random changes in water parameters- or water changes- but they don't always do it at a wc. So idk. It's never seemed to cause them harm for me ?‍♂️

Maybe a temperature issue if temps don’t match?
Have to be honest and say that my Goonch was always in mature water. His tanks only ever had 10% weekly or 20% fortnightly changes and I never saw this. Believe it happens in banjo cats too with similar skin to Goonch.
Your Goonch has the trait bent dorsal of what I see in many b.bagarius, have you decided on which it is?
What temp is it at?

I've always been a massive waterchange kinda guy, and this comment makes sense to me tbh.

Yaponchik Yaponchik got a pic?

He hyperlinked a video in prior post :)

Derp. I even saw that post with the video and it just didn't register lol.

I agree, that fish is Bagarius bagarius

Yaponchik (my contryman?) has got a sweet tank too. Lovely fish. Glad to see Fishman Dave's got a great eye for goonch ID.

Me too! I've a feeling he's super stressed. The last thing he ate was mp with shells left on them (I was target feeding my aro but like I said this goonch eats everything and is afraid of no one) - but I've never encountered it doing something like this from a WC. In fact, it's been 3 days since the last one (before this happened) and I was supposed to do a WC but due to it's condition, I didn't.

Like C Chicxulub I too, am a fan of massive water changes. I afford doing it because our water is non-chlorinated and always pumped fresh daily. Parameters are always stable (at least the past 4 years to me) - but yes, as stated it might be a temperature thing. The thing is I've stopped using heaters and the only problem was late last year / early this year when it was cold and the only time I could do water changes are during the early (starting 5 AM) morning when the heat from yesterday's afternoon would all but have cooled down.

Nowadays it's consistently hot (34C ambient during the afternoon, heating tank water and water supply to 30C) and the temp almost always is a match. The only temp drops I get is when I do more than 30% WC and even then, just a couple degrees (0.3 - 0.5 C)

I have temp probes situated at the bottom of the main tank (3 feet high) and on the return chamber of my sump. They read the same with slightly colder sump water.

I'll look into temp matching even more now (I only ever do it for my grow-outs, a super red aro and 3 hypostomus luteus), thanks!

P.S. much love for the ID, I've been meaning to ask since I've got it, but never really had a chance. Thank you @Chixulub for confirming the ID.

Hi Viktor! I'm from Asia with much love for East Europe. Thank you for your great comments on the tank, though your set up is definitely one that I can only dream of. Yes, I appreciate the ID from Fishman Dave Fishman Dave !

Thank you. :) If you are not a Russian-speaker, do you realize your screen name is a Russian word spelled out in Latin letters? I think you are pulling my leg or this is some kind of a rare and huge coincidence :) No need to answer. This is personal :)

Yes Viktor. Whioe I do not speak Russian, the cyrillic equivalent isn't allowed to be used as a username in most forums. I use Япончик as a handle where it is accepted.

It was what I was called by my colleagues when I was in Serbia (for work) a couple of years back, and it was explained to me during a drunken night out in Belgrade, that I was called this due to my similarities to a certain colorful individual and my ethnic origins.

Last year I was almost stuck in Brnö (due to covid) and I had to explain the handle which the Czechs found funny.

Maybe you could enlighten me on the many meanings of the word over PM ?

And to get back on track, what catfishes are most similar in behavior to a goonch that could be referenced? I ask because goonch cats aren't really the most common or easily acquired cats here... For example, would behavioral traits be comparable to a tigrinus or a piraiba?

I hope the goonch guys will share what they think about your last question. To me it seems catfish like goonch, tig, and piraiba are pretty aloof but fish size matters to a personality. Bigger fish are less fearful of people. Not that you want to hand feed the goonch anyway, I don't imagine :)

Your handle is funny. Makes me smile anyway, although the "colorful individual" is a controversial and tragic figure, an Odessa gangster, Jewish revolutionary, and a Soviet military leader. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mishka_Yaponchik I don't think I have anything to add that you'd not know already :)
