Its called probing and it should only be done by someone experienced... And I dont mean Petco Joe who just happens to have a pen...

Once its older, it should be apperent. Females get larger and stockier, and males develop bigger spurs and the tail length should be easily comparable.
 
thanks for the info.. well i tried a feeding today, didnt work out too well. seemed like it was in a bad mood, hissed at me a lil, i put it into a 10g with some paper towells down as a feeder cage, and gave him a "thumped" rat pup, and he didnt want to eat, so i guess ill try tomorrow. they said he ate on monday, so i may be trying too early...
 
I would give him /her a week to settle in b4 you try to feed .If not it can cause un do stress to the snake .Also try not to handel 4 a few days so it gets used to it's new environment .
 
I agree, do not handle the snake and do not feed for at least a week. And then try to feed in his enclosure at night when it is quiet.
 
Awesome snake. I'd like one, but they get too big for my liking.

5" too big?

another way to determine sex is after the bum-hole the males have longer more taipered tails. females are very short and stubby. for the price you paid, i would say male. also. this is not a sure fire way to tell, its just to get an idea. dont be sure til some one very expirienced probes it.
 
ok ill let him be for a while. i have knowticed, he comes out during the day, and basks under th elight, than around about 7pm he goes back into the hide. ive also seen it is a tad grumpy hopefully that goes away...
 
He should be grumpy. Youre a giant monster that smells funny, hes a little snake (snack?). Its understandable.

Let him be for a few weeks while he gets used to you, then once you think hes used to your presence, have at it!
