Got a new Plec, help identify.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I'd take a 135 for $135 with algae, just let a bristlenose loose on it.

Toilet bowl cleaner and a very good rinse takes care of the problem in less than ten minutes.

I have never had enough plecs to eat all the algae. Am i offering them too much food?

Depends on the type. If you had 3 bristlenose in a 55 that should be enough to keep the thing spotless. Back when I had that 21.5" the chocolate and bristlenose the tank was spotless.

i cannot recommend enough Otocinclus vittatus. there is also a slightly prettier (but of course more expensive) zebra variety. i have 6 and they are brilliant, and unlike your average pleco doesnt produce loads of waste. only downside is they are small, and so would get eaten by bigger fish, or would need a few to keep a big tank clean. however they are hard workers and do a good job.

I have Oto's in one of my tanks, and I love the Zebras, but they are ten bucks each. I will be investing in some oto's soon.

they are brilliant, some people recommend flying foxes (cant remember the latin name) but they arent as good IMO

Some people say platys graze on algae. Maybe they do, but not enough to make any difference.

why have a platie when you can have a nice pleco type fish. then again, id choose a snail over a platy

I breed them in one of my tanks. I have developed my own strain, the TIGER platy. It's fun to breed your own. They come in so many colors. I would trade them all for a Dat, and I have more than 130.
