got a nile monitor

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
If I had the space I'd love a Nile. Just awesome looking animals. I've heard they can be tamed but that it takes a lot of patience.

Hey bro why not get rid of the newspaper? Provide it some coconut fiber substrate and sand mix about 6 or so inches so he can retreat when he wants. Did you also leave the top open screen or did you cover at least 3/4 of it with foil or plastic to keep humidity in?

I agree with varanio ditch the newspaper .It is easy to clean up but your monitor will feel more comfortible being able to dig / bury and it will also help retain humidity.

Nice monster !!

My first monitor was a nile -it was brilliant - would bite, pee and scratch - all the way to 3ft ... it never calmed down and I eventually gave it to a mate - 18 years later I got another -- as a hatchling - this one calmed down brilliantly and I think only ever bit me a couple of times - anyway it was fine until it got to 18 inches and then turned pyscho !!!

They are an awesome monitor to keep though and beautiful to boot.

As has been said above - I'd give it a different substrate and plenty of hiding places. I think you are doing the right thing keeping him in a small enclosure to start with - you will probably find that he becomes more reactive to you faster in a smaller enclosure.

give him plenty of food

can i use top soil?

he's also not going for the mealworms. is this becauase he's stressed from being moved?? or a bigger problem??
