This will only work with tanks on a stand and would have to be installed before the tank goes on it

Still in the process of figuring out materials and such, hoping some more experienced DIYers then myself will chime in and help with ideas

So this would be basically a wooden box, lined with some sort of waterproof liner (pool liner, maybe an inner plexi box), with drains running out (in my case I can go right through the wall of my room since its facing outside when I do my big build) that would be a bit wider and longer then the tank, only by a few inches. Also in my case, the garden is right under my room so I can make a PVC drain out to that and make it the length of the garden so no one spot gets flooded.

My mom isn't going to mind the eye sore if she knows it would save a bunch of moneys worth of water damage, she supports my crazy fish keeping but that's her biggest worry.

Anyone care to contribute, add an idea for people with tanks in different spots other then outside facing walls or whatever feel free!

Everyone has that thought in the back of their minds coming into the room where your tanks are, just hoping the silicone didn't give for some reason. This would be a HUGE relief to a lot of us and to property owners who rent to aquarists.

So how exactly would this box be situated? I'm trying to imagine how it would be to catch any leak as well as still being able to position the tank on the stand?

I completly get what your tryin to say and i think its a pretty good idea. To those who have trouble picturin it, think of it like when you buy a houseplant you put the clear plastic dish under it to catch extra water. Atleast im pretty sure thats what op is thinkin. Exept for in his, any leak or extra water is caught and goes outside to his garden through pvc. Op please confirm that i have the right idea

But in that situation the pot is sitting in the dish. for a tank the pot would be the stand, so the stand would be saturated in water? I know its better than the house getting soaked but still?

I was picturing for my build under the stand, if you use anything but normal wood (some sort of metal, even water proofed wood) the tank leaking won't effect the stand. Plus if you put some thought into it you could position some PVC to catch the drips on the corners so it wouldn't run down the stand

Even if your stand is something water would ruin, still better then replacing the whole floor, plus your stand would probably get ruined anyway by water running down it to the floor this way at least its being caught and diverted instead of sitting in your carpet and walls etc

Putting it between the stand and the tank would work too, maybe not look as good as being under the stand but it would work. I won't be building mine for a while (early spring) so I will start a separate thread for building it then, I really hope this catches on. It would be such a great relief for people

For just leaks, having just a shallow pan around things would work too. This is what I did with my pumps upstairs... sitting on an old rubbermaid tub lid... with a grommet and hose going back down the registers to a sink.

Cool idea! There are a few tank builders that offer "flood proof" stands which is basically the inside of a metal framed stand lined with a pond liner up to a certain level.

Never seen one myself but it sounds like a cool idea.

Cool idea, but doesn't seem like it would hold the water during a catastrophic break, i.e. a whole panel blow out....
